    3. HI Craig, Nice conundrum! This is what keeps us out of mischief. I think I need to go over my contribution one more time :- I have no doubt that Louisa Matilda WAYLAND married Jesse ALBUT, and that there was no issue. According to old notes, they adopted a daughter, "a niece of his wife, who later married a GILFILLAN". No "given name" identity stated, not for the adoptee and not for the GILFILLAN. So I have absolutely no idea who she was, and I was merely enquiring whether there could be a tie-up with the Ellen on the passenger list. Apologies if I muddied the waters. I await with keen interest the findings of the kind person who will do the look-up on our behalf; this one has been lurking around for too long! 3. Hi Peter You certainly did not muddy the waters, I understood fully what you were saying - it was my reply written in haste which probably confused matters. Anyway, Ellen Stanton (one of our genie angels) has sent me an early Christmas present of various WAYLAND documents that she has. This includes: 1. The marriage register entry for Jesse ALBUT (Farmer at Winterhoek - no age given) and Louisa Matilda WAYLAND (living near Alice) on 10 Jan 1865. I see that C.J. WAYLAND Sr. and C.J. WAYLAND Jr. signed as witnesses. Presumably the first of these (senior) was Louisa's father Charles Joseph. So who is C.J. junior - a brother? 2. The marriage register entry for Alfred GILFILLAN (aged 34 and a farmer at Glenheath, Middelburg) and Ellen WAYLAND (aged 26, resident at Lovedale at the time of their wedding) who were married at Lovedale on 1 March 1881 by W.T. (or F) GAUL. The witnesses who signed are C.W.H. WAYLAND and W.H. WAYLAND (presumably Charles William Henry and Walter Hart - two of Ellen's brothers). So based on this information I am now convinced that this Ellen WAYLAND was the daughter of Charles WAYLAND and Matilda Lucy HART. 3. The baptisms in the Somerset East Wesleyan-Methodist Chapel for the following children of Charles Joseph WAYLAND and Matilda (HART) - all by Rev. EDWARDS: - Louisa Matilda WAYLAND (b. 5 May 1846, bap. 31 May 1846) - Elizabeth WAYLAND (b. 27 Sep 1847 at Riet River, bap. 2 Mar 1848) - Emma WAYLAND (b. 20 Oct 1848 at Wheatlands, Melk Rivier, bap. 10 Jan 1849) - Charles William Henry (b. 01 Aug 1850 at Melk Rivier, bap. 13 Oct 1850 4. Baptisms in the Port Elizabeth Wesleyan-Methodist Chapel for the following children of Charles Joseph WAYLAND and Matilda (HART): - William Hart WAYLAND (b. 01 Aug 1852, bap. 25 Dec 1857) - Helen WAYLAND [this I assume is the Ellen we have been discussing - the E in Edwin below looks like the H in Helen, so the latter is probably Ellen] (b. 22 Jun 1854. bap. 25 Dec 1857) - Arthur Edwin WAYLAND (b. 5 Feb 1856, bap. 25 Dec 1857) All three of the above were born in the same place, but I cannot decipher the place name. Hope that provides some additional info for some people and a huge thanks as always to Ellen Stanton. I will be away for a while, so will pick up any further discussion on this after the Christmas break. Seasons greetings to everyone.
