Hi Elaine, I hope that this is still your current e-mail address. My name is Sidney Miller, and I am a Conservation Architect that was requested to document the 'cottage turned dwelling' on Haverklip before its imminent demolition to make way to another Coal project in the area. (What a slaughter of the Mpumalanga heritage in general!). From Isabel Knox of Delmas Coal, I learned that the occupants were possibly associated with the surname Browne, (as well as Botha?), because of interested parties that visited the site and cemetery some time in the near past. I then searched on the web and came across your correspondence with south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com>. As it is so much better to add personality to a condemned building, I humbly request that if you so feel inclined that you supply us with what you know about Haverklip, its owners and the people that lived there. Concerning the dwelling of which I attach a photograph I built up 'an architectural impression of the builder'. It is as follows:- A bachelor of breeding but limited personal resources, of British (Scottish?) decent. This person was living alone for possibly a decade or two without apparent 'farming related structures on the premises' that would have given him a 'legitimate' farmer's profile. He then marrying and enlarged the building to suit marital life. He then soon passed away. No plumbing or electricity services in the dwelling shows inhabitants of rugged character. Kind Regards Sidney Miller Cel, 082 939 6536
Herbert Howard BROWNE Snr. (my gg grandfather) was one of the 24 children born to John BROWNE & Maria THURTELL (who were double first cousins); unfortunately only 12 of their children survived to adulthood. He was born before the 1 April 1825 at Pudding Norton Hall, Pudding Norton, Colkirk, Norfolk England (the date on which he was baptised at St. Mary's, Colkirk) and died 31 January 1898 at Boksburg. He married Maria Susanna Wilhelmina HART born 28 December 1834 Glen Avon, Somerset East, Eastern Cape of Good Hope died 31st May 1922 Pretoria Generla Hospital, Pretoria. They were both buried on Haverklip but so far we haven't been able to find their graves. We have found several other graves on the farm. Herbert Howard BROWNE we know emigrated to the Cape to join several relations already living there after the 6 June 1841 (he was recorded as being at Pudding Norton Hall at the time of the 1841 Census). He stayed with a Maternal uncle James THURTELL alias MURRAY and his wife Sarah (nee HOLT) en route to leaving Britain. The visit was recorded in a letter to one of her two sons living in California (the original of the letter is housed in the library of Berkley University, California but transcriptions of her letters can be found on a website. At that time Herbert Howard BROWNE was about 16 years of age.
