    3. Hi Malcolm, Some years back we came across a street in Krugersdorp with the same name as my wife's family (BARRATT). I sent an e-mail to the Krugersdorp municipality and I received a reply, including a copy of a newspaper article giving the history behind the name. It turned out that her great uncle had owned a factory that manufactured steel cable for the mines and his factory was the first to be established in the new industrial area. The street was named after him. Always worth a shot because there is usually a history behind the older names. New ones are usually picked at random from a selected group and usually have no background. All the best, Paddy -----Original Message----- From: Malcolm Stevens Sent: Saturday, December 15, 2012 12:19 PM To: south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com Subject: [ZA-EC] Street Naming Records: Wright Street, Port Elizabeth Compliments of the festive season to all my fellow listers. Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas 2012. My wife's Wright ancestors hail from Port Elizabeth, with a family story that Wright Street in PE was named after this part of the family. Pffffttt I though until I found a marriage record today, with one of the Wright's living in Wright Street, PE in 1938. Perhaps there is some truth to this story. Question is, is there a way to find out who a street is named after in city records? regards Malcolm ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to SOUTH-AFRICA-EASTERN-CAPE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

I have duly written to someone in the department of roads of the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality and will let you know if I get a reply! regards Malcolm On 2012/12/15 01:14 PM, Pat Brown wrote: > Hi Malcolm, > Some years back we came across a street in Krugersdorp with the same name > as my wife's family (BARRATT). 3. Sadly the email I sent bounced back - clearly the email address they have on their website is old. I'll try other emails and see how I progress. rgds Mal On 2012/12/15 03:46 PM, Malcolm Stevens wrote: > Hi Paddy > > Thank you for this suggestion.
