    3. The following contribution may or may not fit: In 1838 a sister (Mellicent) of the two 1820 Settler HOBSON brothers (David and Carey) came to SA with her second husband, Edwin ALBUT, accompanied by 4 children from her first marriage (NASH), and a daughter by her second husband (Sarah Maria ALBUT - later married to Seymour WARD). Mellicent and Edwin had another son (Jesse ALBUT) born at Mancazana Post in 1841. Jesse ALBUT married Louisa Matilda WAYLAND. Cryptic old family notes tell us that Jesse "had no children of his own, but he adopted a daughter (a niece of his wife) who later married a GILFILLAN". No name was given for the adopted daughter. Could this be Ellen WAYLAND, referred to below? 1. Re: [ZA-EC] A Few Passengers for Algoa Bay 1861 - WAYLAND and GILFILLAN

    3. Hi Peter and Fay This is yet another mystery concerning the GILFILLAN and WAYLAND families. In summary, this is the info that many of us have: Ellen WAYLAND (born 22 Jun 1854 - according to Tessa King she was baptised in PE - I don't have those details, so may have been born there or close by). She was the 6th of 7 children born to Charles Joseph WAYLAND (1817-1889) and Matilda Lucy HART (1826-1877) [not from the Robert HART family]. Their eldest child was Louisa Matilda WAYLAND (1846-?) who married Jesse ALBUT as referred to by Peter below. Ellen supposedly married Alfred GILFILLAN in about 1871. Alfred was born 25 Mar 1846 in Cradock and died 17 Mar 1915 in Queenstown (see http://www.eggsa.org/library/main.php?g2_itemId=1228246). He was the youngest son of William F.A. GILFILLAN and Anna Margaret nee THORNHILL. Ellen died in Middelburg on 28 Jul 1926. The mystery, however, is that Ellen's Memorial inscription reads: "Ellen GILFILLAN died 28.7.1926 nee WAYLAND aged 72 years, wife of Henry". So was the use of "Henry" just a mistake or was she really married to a Henry GILFILLAN - if so who was he and who then did Alfred marry? I only have 2 Henry's in the whole GILFILLAN family and both of them are fully accounted for. The only way to resolve this is to get some kind person to check the Death Notice details for Ellen in the Cape Archives: KAB MOOC 6/9/3010 Ref 12241 and likewise for Alfred: KAB MOOC 6/9/781 Ref 813 (and KAB MOOC 13/1/2511 Ref 39). It seems very unlikely that the above Ellen WAYLAND would have been adopted by her sister Louisa and Jesse ALBUT. So the family story Peter mentions must be referring to a different Ellen WAYLAND. As far as I know Louisa and Ellen only had 3 brothers - Charles William Henry WAYLAND (born 1852, died abt 1929 - no further details), Walter (or Wallis - some more confusion here about his correct name) Hart WAYLAND (1852-1935) and Arthur Edwin WAYLAND (born 1856, died abt 1918 - no further details). So perhaps the nice Ellen was a child of either Charles or Arthur. Best wishes Craig -----Original Message----- From: Peter Kirkman Sent: Monday, December 17, 2012 9:01 AM To: south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ZA-EC] A Few Passengers for Algoa Bay 1861 The following contribution may or may not fit: In 1838 a sister (Mellicent) of the two 1820 Settler HOBSON brothers (David and Carey) came to SA with her second husband, Edwin ALBUT, accompanied by 4 children from her first marriage (NASH), and a daughter by her second husband (Sarah Maria ALBUT - later married to Seymour WARD).
