    3. Hi Graham and Marius I have been away so am a bit behind the discussion on GRAVETT /WATERS Going back through all the old notes from Val and Becky and Tessa. I have 7 children from the marriage to Hannah(X 7 Dec 1859...Hannah was just 18 )and six children to the second wife Emily LISHER whom he married 31 Jul 1890. I have a total of 13 children. I have a seventh child as a stillborn just before the 1880 child where both mother and child die. I have no idea who gave me this info as I have it listed as "family sources" and then forgot to list who actually gave me that info. (so of course it could be wrong) His burial details state that he was 99 years and 6 days old in 1922( died 22 oct 1922 source: East and southern cape Burial and cremation records 2012) So he married Hannah at age 36 and married Emily LISHER at age 67 and 79 years old when his last child Ronald Gravett was born 7 mar 1902(source Estelle Gravett see emails mar 2001). Wow energetic man ! I have no idea how the WATERs family is connected. I seem to have three different lots ...see your email dated 11 nov...I have made no progress at all with this family. 1) as Hannah WATERS * 1841 and first wife of George came from Cornwall: ame: Hannah Waters gender: Female baptism/christening date: 10 Jan 1843 baptism/christening place: LADOCK,CORNWALL,ENGLAND birth date: 14 Feb 1841 birthplace: death date: name note: race: father's name: Thomas Waters father's birthplace: father's age: mother's name: Ann(she was MUGFORD) mother's birthplace: mother's age: indexing project (batch) number: P00170-2 system origin: England-ODM source film number: 231924 reference number: 2) Then John Henry WATERS born 1869 who X your Hannah Derenda GRAVETT... parents .unable to find parents details but I have 10 children..basically a composition of Tessa's email and then a few other emails and lots of questions. I think Hubert Kenneth is the younger brother to Millicent Derenda.I am not convinced that some children don't belong to the other lot of GRAVETTS.(William/James /Ivy/Grant /Amy/Beatrice/ Millicent/Hubert Kenneth/Vera/George). I have no idea if this is correct. They all need to be checked. 3)Thomas WATERS born 1833 who X Lucy GODFREY...no parents but a Jane WATERS and a Charles WATERS present at the marriage. No other details. Sorry but my WATERS lines need work as I have no idea if these three people are connected. Regards Cheri ----- Original Message ----- From: "Graham Dickason" <gdic@global.co.za> > No, no sources. 3. Hi, Cheri Truly a confusing lot, the Waters' - to make it more complicated, there was some intermarriage. Regarding George GRAVETT & Hannah WATERS, I have 6 children (including the stillborn): Louisa Millicent b1860 Jane b about 1865 Hannah Derenda b1870 Edwin George b1871 Mildred Harriet Best b1877 Unknown 1880 I did some further research into our Hannah WATERS and believe that she was actually from Shalbourne in (then) Berkshire and came to ZA with her parents Job and Mary on the ship Zenobia in 1850. Sources: "Aided Immigration from Britain to South Africa 1857 to 1867" - Esme Bull & 1841 census. So I have the children: Thomas b. 1833 d. 1916 Charles b. 1835 d. 1922 Ann b. 1838 d. 1883 Hannah b. 1841 d. 1880 Eli b. 1850 (died on the ship) Sarah b. 1854 d. 1929 I'm certain of three (of your 10) children of John Henry WATERS and Hannah Derenda GRAVETT: Millicent Derenda (my grandmother) - she married a MARAIS Hubert Owen "Manzi" b. 1912 d. 2005 (he was the only WATERS of this line that I met myself & I have a photograph of his grave) Beatrice - married a SCHEEPERS Then my mom says she's sure her mom also had a sister Jane who lived in Pietermaritzburg, but "they (John and Hannah) had lots of children" Thomas WATERS b. 1833 (who married Lucy GODFREY) was one of Hannah's brothers (see above). The Charles could have been his brother. My biggest mystery is John Henry WATERS - lots of information on him, except family! 3. Thanks Marius for filling in some gaps re WATERS. This whole lot is confusing as you are right three families kept on marrying cousins!! I had a note: William Edwin WATERS*8 April 1892 died 2 Dec 1970(source East and Southern Cape Burial/cremation records 2012 EC Eggsa) X Martha Ann GODFREY *11.04.1891 died 07.01.1973. Dont know if this is the William WATERS who is the older brother of Millicent Derenda and son of Hannah? Will check it out as the dates fit(parents married 6 Aug 1890) and the only other William's I can find were born too early. NB The other thing is that I found our John Henry WATERS linked to the other WATERS: Thomas WATERS * 1833 X Lucy GODFREY. Their daughter Mary Jane WATERS married into the LISHER family! She married Phillip LISHER 7 years before his sister Emily LISHER married George GRAVETT in 1890.Aaargh! See: "Philip was born May 8, 1855. Philip was baptised June 24, 1855 at King William's Town, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Philip and Mary WATERS [43480] were married April 24, 1883 at "Barville Park" Church (Wesleyan), "Barville Park", Port Alfred (nr), Eastern Cape, South Africa by Rev William Holford. *****Witnesses: John Henry Waters, Sarah Ann Waters, Emily Matilda Lisher(source Hugo Slater)" Cheri -----Original Message----- From: south-africa-eastern-cape-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:south-africa-eastern-cape-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Marius Kock Sent: Monday, 7 January 2013 6:48 PM To: south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ZA-EC] HISTORY OF KENTON-ON-SEA & SETTLER FAMILIES - WATERS/Gravett Hi, Cheri Truly a confusing lot, the Waters' - to make it more complicated, there was some intermarriage.
