    3. Hi Rose It states on my grandfather's death certificate (1924) that he was a 'fireman'. He lived in Uitenhage at the time and so I am wondering was there a railways in Uitenhage at that time or could this mean 'fireman' as in Fire Engines?     3. Hi Ethel, Yes indeed the railway existed in Uitenhage from 1877 - (the line as far as Kariega). According to my book, "the first sod of the railway line between Uitenhage and Graaff-Reinet was turned on 20 March 1875". It was the Cape Midland Line.
