Hi Marielle, Thanks for your suggested corrections - they really can and do add value to the researchers. Many people email me directly with their corrections and I update my spreadsheet but this invariably does not get republished. I think some people are considering setting up an online database which would allow centralised updating of records. Some of the handwriting is impossible to decipher and one resorts to a little bit of educated guesswork at times, looking at the informant's name or deciphering the signature of the informant. I do not go to NAAIRS to verify details - it would add too much time per transcription. I also generally try and transcribe what I see on the document even if I believe it should be spelled differently, favouring the spelling used by the informant in their signature rather than the person who wrote out the document. There are some typos which will invariably crop up and for these I really do apologise - I simply don't do the double checking which other transcribers may do, trusting my initial work is sufficient for most people. Now you did ask about me missing out record 195, a John Malgas. I only transcribe the records of "Europeans" - not because I am being discriminatory against other races but because my transcribing is primarily done for myself for my own family research, which is European-focused. I publish for others to benefit from my work. The transcribing which I have done for FamilySearch is fully inclusive of all records and when those transcriptions are eventually made available to the public we'll see full record sets made available. I do apologise to anyone who feels I may be excluding records which could be of great value to them but I'm sure you'll now understand better why this is.
