Hi Generally but not always repeat not always there is a "starting" date at the bottom of the record. This is generally a very close approximation of the year of death. Also in some of the archives the "reference number" is the often the estate number which often ends in the year of death. Please note the dates outlined above are not cast in stone just a guide. Thanks Rod and John. I found a death notice in NAAIRS for Maria Christina GILBERT (nee NORTIER) for which the date shown is 1886. Information indicates that she may have died in Ladismith, W.Cape. I have very little information about her family but do have the following:- She is the wife of James Charles GILBERT (no other information) They had a son (my great-grandfather) Isaac Henry GILBERT born in Ladismith, Cape 20 Jan 1857) who probably died in Calitzdorp date unknown. I will try the searches you have suggested John. Many thanks, David
