Hi listers We broke open the lock on a kist left in our old house by my father-in-law's mother and it it was a treasure trove of old letters, newspapers and postcards from different family members, (also a whole lot of fancy napkins and tableclothes that I have no idea what to do with!). I come across a lot of newspaper cuttings pertaining to Wellbeloveds, (some mention of Attwell, Nel, Jannsen), Hill-Norton and Page (our family). I want to put these into a scrapbook. Is there a certain type of paper and glue I should be using? Also, does someone have Joy Wellbeloved's email address for me please? Wow what a fantastic find. You need to only use acid free paper and glue and NO plastic or any plastic sandwiching. Philatelists sell polypropylene esting Materials for Acidity Inexpensive pH test pens <http://miniatures.about.com/od/printablematerials/qt/Use-Ph-Testing-Pens-To -Check-The-Acidity-Of-Papers-And-Porous-Materials.htm> from art, photography and scrapbook suppliers can be used to text papers for acidity. The pen is used to make a mark on the paper, and the mark will change color, in a range from blue through green to yellow to indicate the paper's acidity. Remember that paper can absorb acid from your hands, so test areas of the paper which have not been handled, and also remember that paper if left in the atmosphere, can absorb acidity from its environment or from acidic materials it comes in contact with. Papers which start off acid free, may absorb sufficient amounts of acidity from the atmosphere to test as being acidic. Papers labelled as acid free may also contain lignin which can change the acidity of the paper as it breaks down. Lignin testing pens which turn orange on contact with lignin based papers are also available from museum and archival supply stores.
