Hi Ellen, Thank you for your reply - now that my dad is deceased, I have no way of finding all the people he dealt with in compiling his records and of course the older generation would not all be around either so I feel I must verify as much information as possible - this is difficult because all the Eastern Cape records are housed in Grahamstown which is about six hours from where I live - we are planning to stay over in December on our way to our daughter's wedding in Cape Town so in the meantime I must get all my information in order so I can utilise the time to good effect. I do not know a THOMAS although WEBB is close enough to WEBBER - I believe the WEBBER family were from Devonshire and had to do with webbing or weaving of fishing nets - perhaps WEBB is from that too. Our surname was originally STANKOVICH, and his grandparents emigrated from Lithuania to the U.S. in the early 20th century. The name was changed to STANTON during WWII. I guess they wanted to sound more "American". His South African grandmother was a THOMAS. Her parents were James Percy and Martha Ann (nee WEBB) THOMAS. The Webber family married into them in the same generation, three times -two Webber brothers married two Stanton sisters and one sister Naomi married a Webber too - sorry I don't have the names with me at work but I can give you if you want to cross reference. My dad has passed away so all I have are his written notes - no annoying as I now have so many questions to ask him!
