Hi Sue, I think you are on the right track, as all those baptisms make sense. I have also not found any marriages for Lucy to either William Finaughty or Henry Ulyate, but have found a possible clue as to why William and Lucy parted. On 26 February1810 a William Finnaughty was sentenced to imprisonment for larceny(theft). Engand and Wales Criminal registers 1791 - 1892 held at the National Archives under Class HO 26; piece 16, page 32. It is a very feint copy on Ancestry and I cannot work out the terms of the sentence. If he was interned for a few years, this could be why Lucy had the three Ulyate Finaughty children, who dropped the Finaughty name when they emigrated as 1820 Settlers? Henry and Lucy couldn't marry, because William was still potentially alive, but passed themselves off as marrried in the new country? Speulation? ;-) Best regards Paul -- Paul Tanner-Tremaine Hampshire, England email : [email protected] website : www.1820Settlers.com -------------------------------------------- On Mon, 4/7/14, Sue Mackay <[email protected]> wrote: Subject: [ZA-EC] ULYATE and FINAUGHTY To: "SA List" <[email protected]>, "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Date: Monday, April 7, 2014, 12:10 PM I have been updating the extra information on selected 1820 settlers available at http://www.eggsa.org/1820-settlers/ (click on Additional Information on the right hand side). I have only included pre 1820 information from UK records taken from primary sources, as there seems to be so much conflicting information on SA settler sites. As I now have access to original images from parish registers held at the Westminster Archives I have been able to add a few more specific dates and places to files already uploaded. I have also added a few new files (easily spotted, as the hit count is not yet in three figures!!) and will gradually be adding more as I find new records. New files include various members of WAINWRIGHT’s Party with information from original parish registers in the West Yorkshire Archives. Please let me know if you find any mistakes. One family has led me a merry dance, and information is exceedingly varied on the various settler sites, so I would be interested to know whether you think I have drawn the correct conclusion. This concerns the ULYATE and FINAUGHTY family who sailed with WAIT on the Zoroaster. The Settler Handbook says that Henry ULYATE and his wife Lucy had three children of their own (Mary, Henry and Sarah) in addition to George, who was born on the voyage. Travelling with them were three FINAUGHTY children, Lucy, William and John, said to be Henry’s stepchildren and thus Lucy’s children from her first marriage. I have found Lucy’s baptism. She was baptised as Lucy MOLES, daughter of John and Lucy, Millwright, on 2 January 1785 in St.John Horselydown, Bermondsey (born 18 December 1784) I have not found any marriage for Lucy. It does not help that some sites say her husband was John FINAUGHTY and others that he was William FINAUGHTY! It seems that she was married to a London greengrocer named William FINAUGHTY, however, as I have found the following baptisms: Lucy Moles, daughter of William and Lucy FINAUGHTY, was baptised on 20 October 1805 in St.Mary's, Islington (born 11 July) George William, son of William and Lucy FINAUGHTY, was baptised on 3 January 1808 in St.Mary's, Islington (born 22 August 1807) Joseph, son of William and Lucy FINAUGHTY, was baptised on 10 June 1810 in St.Pancras Old Church (born 2 April) John, son of William and Lucy FINAUGHTY, Somers Town, Grocer, was baptised on 23 January 1814 in St.Pancras Old Church Assuming that Joseph died in infancy, the other three are plausible for the children who sailed as Henry’s stepchildren I don’t think that Lucy can actually have married Henry ULYATE, as the baptisms of “their” children all seem to have been listed as children of William FINAUGHTY, but with ULYATE as a middle name, which suggests to me that she left William and had a family with Henry, but was unable to marry Henry legitimately as William was still alive? Or have I missed something? Here are the baptisms – I can’t find one for a Sarah, and certainly not on the same page as Henry (the Settler Handbook suggests Henry and Sarah were twins) Henry Ulyat FINAUGHTY, son of William and Lucy FINAUGHTY, Skinner Street, Greengrocer, baptised 2 April 1815 in St.Pancras Old Church Jane Ullyate FINAUGHTY, daughter of William and Lucy FINAUGHTY, Hampstead, Greengrocer, baptised 1 June 1817 in St.John's, Hampstead (born 22 November 1816) Maria Ulyate FINAUGHTY, daughter of William and Lucy FINAUGHTY, Hampstead, Greengrocer, baptised 14 June 1818 in St.John's, Hampstead (born 3 May) I’d be interested to here from descendants of this family to know if they have any proof of a marriage between Henry and Lucy.
