Interesting. I have looked on the Old Bailey site and it seems that William was sentenced to six months and a public flogging! http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/browse.jsp?id=t18100221-73&div=t18100221-73 If this is indeed him then it must have been pretty hard on Lucy. He was convicted on 19 February 1810 and she gave birth to Joseph on 2 April. Maybe that's why Joseph didn't survive as she was left to cope on her own. However, they seem to have had further children after his release, and indeed I have found a further baptism. Mary Anne Hewlet, daughter of William and Lucy FINNARTY, Skinner St, Greengrocer was baptised on 3 October 1813 in St.Pancras Old Church Skinner Street was where Lucy was living for the first "Ulyate" birth. If he was interned for a few years, this could be why Lucy had the three Ulyate Finaughty children, who dropped the Finaughty name when they emigrated as 1820 Settlers? Henry and Lucy couldn't marry, because William was still potentially alive, but passed themselves off as marrried in the new country? Hi Sue, Next piece of the puzzle - see http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/1116618/family/familygroup?fpid=-1045830744 They have William marrying Lucy in 1803, and dying 1813, which appears to fit our hypothesis. rgds -- Paul Tanner-Tremaine Hampshire, England email : [email protected] website : www.1820Settlers.com -------------------------------------------- On Tue, 4/8/14, Sue Mackay <[email protected]> wrote: Subject: Re: [ZA-EC] ULYATE and FINAUGHTY To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]>, "SA List" <[email protected]> Date: Tuesday, April 8, 2014, 12:54 PM Interesting. I have seen lots of trees, but all of them say that Lucy and William married 'about 1803' and that William died 'about 1813', extrapolating from the birth dates of the children, I presume. No-one seems to have found documentary evidence.
