Dear Mike and Irene I do believe the Alfred EDWARDS could be the son of Alfred Stephen EDWARDS b 1870 and possibly could have fathered a child at age 16/17. Most of the descendants of Thomas EDWARDS and Mary Ann KING landed up in Rhodesia and that is also a reason I presume he is the same person, but yet as you say we cannot assume until we have the proof. This is what I have on this family: Descendants of Alfred EDWARDS (Unlinked) ---------------------------------------- a1-Alfred EDWARDS (Unlinked) born: Abt 1865-1870 chr: died: buried: +Annie Elizabeth born: chr: died: buried: parents: |--a1b1-Cecil James EDWARDS | born: 19 December 1886 | chr: 12 January 1888, Methodist Church, Fort Beaufort, Cape Colony | died: | buried: | +Annie Catherine ERASMUS | born: 1892 | chr: | marr: 26 November 1912, Christ Church (Anglican), Adelaide, Cape Colony by Osmond Cookson | died: 22 January 1938, Salisbury Hospital, Rhodesia | buried: | parents: | |--a1b1c1-Cecil Reynold EDWARDS | | born: 1916 | | chr: | | died: 21 January 1938, Gatooma, Hartley District, Rhodesia | | buried: | |--a1b1c2-Eunice Valda EDWARDS | | born: | | chr: | | died: | | buried: | | +Nn KEOGH | | born: | | chr: | | | | died: | | buried: | | parents: | |--a1b1c3-William James EDWARDS | | born: 1919 | | chr: | | died: | | buried: | |--a1b1c4-Eugene EDWARDS | | born: 1928 | | chr: | | died: | | buried: | |--a1b1c5-Elaine EDWARDS | born: 1930 | chr: | died: | buried: |--a1b2-Ivy May EDWARDS born: 22 May 1888, Adelaide, Eastern Cape, South Africa chr: 22 January 1892, Christ Church (Anglican), Adelaide, Cape Colony by John Aldred died: buried: +Robert Henry GOWLAND born: Abt 1882 chr: marr: 27 February 1911, Christ Church (Anglican), Adelaide, Cape Colony by Matthew Norton died: buried: parents: ---------------------------------------- Regards Darryl Allwright -----Original Message----- From: south-africa-eastern-cape-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:south-africa-eastern-cape-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Mike Wright via Sent: 30 May 2015 18:43 To: south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com; south-africa-immigrants-british@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ZA-EC] Cecil James EDWARDS Hi Irene Thanks for that. I suppose it is possible for a 16 year old to father a child!! I, too, have Alfred Stephen (b. 6 Mar 1870) in my tree, and did wonder about him being the father. I'd love to get some proof of it though. I can't find a marriage record showing his marriage to an Anna Elizabeth - if I could find that, it might be the proof needed! His parents were Father:Alfred Stephen EDWARDS born 29 July 1833 in Fort Beaufort died 19 April 1870 (the same year his son was born, the last of five siblings - other sibling names avail if you want them, but I have no spouses or offspring) Mother: Rhoda KING b 15 Aug 1836 ;d 1 Sep 1937, Frere Hosp EL (Rhoda married again after those 5 children, to John THOMPSON.) I have more ancestor info on these people but not the offspring info you have. But the dates look rational for the younger Alfred Stephen EDWARDS I have, to possibly be the father of your Cecil James EDWARDS To link the ones I have back to 1820 settlers: My Alfred Stephen Edwards the elder one was the son of James EDWARDS and wife Ann THOMAS, 1820 settlers. & Rhoda KING was the daughter of Joseph KING (Jr) b 9 Aug 1808 and wife Ann BRADLEY both 1820 settlers. (I have more dates etc if these look like a fit.) (I know that the Sumner family was friendly with the Edwards family. They also intermarry in the 1880s. Methodist and Anglican church events both were common for those two families.) PLEASE... LET ME KNOW IF YOU THINK THIS IS A LINK? By the way, my wife's uncle, who is a grandson of Cecil James EDWARDS, tells me that Cecil insisted he was born in Dordrecht. This could be true, but he was definitely baptised in Fort Beaufort, and his parents were from Adelaide. Perhaps Anna Elizabeth's parents lived in or near Dordrecht, and she went "home" for the birth?
