    3. The army ration biscuits were designed to be nutritious and to keep well for long periods under all sorts of conditions. They were a staple ration. As a conscript in the SA Army I came across them on numerous occasions - we called them dog biscuits. They were definitely as hard as clinker bricks. They were made for the SA Army by Anderson's bakery in Kokstad, East Griqualand. They could be dunked in coffee, crushed and crumbled into a porridge mush, or used to throw at and kill birds which provided a much tastier meal. Best wishes, John

    3. It was a staple during WW2 at our Radar stations, sometimes cut off by floods on one occasion we made a sort of bread and butter pudding. we always had lots of raisins and dried milk. But I am interested, John, when was there conscription in South Africa. Certainly not during WW2.
