    3. Just checked the passenger lists. On the. Wandrahm there was an August SCHMIDT and a Michael SCHMIDT both from Prussia On the Wilhelmsburg there was an Àdolph SCHMIDT from Zerrenthien. On the Peter Godeffroy there was Friedrich SCHMIDT from Tenkau >From my own research into my family who arrived the first ship in July 1858 I found many instances where names were changed for reasons I cannot find out. My own gggrandfather was born August Hermann GEBHARDT but in all documents I have seen he is referred to as only Herman. His son, when finalising his estate had to swear an avidavid that his father's names were in fact August Hermann. All his sons anglacised their christian names making it difficult to plot the family. Therefore I suggest you record you ancester as Wilhelm Friederich SCHMIDT. The spelling of Friederich may vary from family to family. I have a Frederick Wilhelm in my database b 22 June 1873 son of Matheus SCHMIDT and Carolina Louisa no name. I would be glad to let you have more on the family, although this is not my main area of research. I would like to respond to your e-mail, if my info is still of help to you. I did a quick look up through my lists, and could only find a Friederich/Friedrich Scmidt, who immigrated during 1858 to South Africa. He was born in Kutzerow, 41 years of age, wife Caroline (37) Friedrich(14), Wilhelmine(8) Johanna (3). Who came to South Africa on the Peter Godeffroy. If any of these names appear in your family, it might be worthwhile looking at a different spelling of the surname:- Scmidt instead of Smith. Regards. Trudie Marais Hello Lister I need to find lists of any german immigration to SA between 1858 to 1881. I am trying to locate the ship my gggranfather was on when he landed in SA. His death notice says he was born in Germany but his nationality was British so I am assuming he became British when he landed in SA. My gggranfather name was William Frederick Smith. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to SOUTH-AFRICA-EASTERN-CAPE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
