In one paragraph mention is made the bread ration was stopped and replaced with 'klinkers'. I have not heard this term used as a food item. Would anyone know what it is as they write that the 'klinkers' were so hard that even if soaked for half a day, still could not be eaten. 3. The army ration biscuits were designed to be nutritious and to keep well for long periods under all sorts of conditions. They were a staple ration. As a conscript in the SA Army I came across them on numerous occasions - we called them dog biscuits. They were definitely as hard as clinker bricks. They were made for the SA Army by Anderson's bakery in Kokstad, East Griqualand. They could be dunked in coffee, crushed and crumbled into a porridge mush, or used to throw at and kill birds which provided a much tastier meal. Best wishes, John

According to the boer war site, link below, these are "biscuits". <http://www.angloboerwar.com/books/74-de-wet-three-years-war/1518-de-wet-chapter-v-the-overwhelming-forces-of-lord-roberts> search klinkers.........it has [19] after it then scroll down to the bottom item [19] where it explains "biscuits" > I have not heard this term used as a food item. Would anyone know what it is as they write that the 'klinkers' were so hard that even if soaked for half a day, still could not be eaten. Sounds like those particular biscuits were already fossilized with age :-) (The boers were treated abominably) > In another section mention is made of how the prisoners made pancakes from potatoes. 2. Eighteen-Twenty Settlers via
    3. Rod, et al, I have been doing some 'digging' over the last couple of days trying to find where the Mitford and Bowker were added to the Joplin name. I think the marriage cert you refer to is correct; surname Joplin not Bowker-Joplin. If you look at his signature, there is a 'dash' there, but I don't think it was written. Dirty paper, or a slip of the pen? Jean Langford Joplin's headstone ( www.eggsa.org/library/main.php?g2_itemId=1278013 ) says she was born JOPLIN, not Bowker-Joplin. I have also found Mitford's brother Ernest Bowker Joplin's marriage certificate ( https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1942-23580-67151-80?cc=1468076 ), and he signed it as E B Joplin. So, I do NOT think it was a hyphenated name, but still haven't found a Bowker connection, unless they were neighbours or something? rgds Paul -- Paul Tanner-Tremaine Hampshire, England email : eighteentwenty@btinternet.com website : www.1820Settlers.com -------------------------------------------- On Wed, 4/3/15, rodg via <south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com> wrote: Subject: [ZA-EC] Bowker-Joplin or Bowker Joplin?
