Hi Sue, Many thanks for all the transcribing that you do. As a Mitchley descendent I do find your suggestion about the Jones baptisms food for thought and have passed it on to one of the other 'Mitchley's' to bounce the idea off her. From what I can see on google maps, St Giles in the Fields and Little St Andrews Street are between Soho where Peter Daniel had his children baptised and where he lived and Holborn where Ann Mitchley's brother Thomas and his wife lived. So far we haven't been able to find the baptisms of Thomas, Sampson and Eliza (Elizabeth), nor of the next child Ann born in 1818. Interesting... regards Gail

I have now finished all the Settler Returns in CO48/47 at Kew, except for WILLSON's Party, which I hope to do today. I had a few problems doing TURVEY's returns, which were a bit of a mess with frequent scorings out and changes, and it didn't help that the final return was the only photograph I took at Kew that was so out of focus as to be almost illegible. However, the writing in the earlier return is clear and it seems that the "servant" travelling with Peter Clarke DANIEL was Ann JONES rather than Ann MITCHLEY, whose name is not mentioned. I had been given to understand that Ann MITCHLEY was the mother of several of the children travelling with Peter DANIEL. I have now found a triple baptism on 5 January 1816 in St.Giles in the Fields, London for three children baptised Thomas, Sampson and Elizabeth JONES, living at 9 Little St.Andrews Street, where the parents are listed as Peter and Ann. Food for thought? Sue

HI Jenn, According to the UK BMD register Albert was born in the district of Witney, Oxfordshire during the period July/Sept 1840. The reference is Volume 16 Page 121. The image of the 1851 Census shows the address as 162 and what looks like "New Mills or New Hills " and Alberts father, William, is shown as what looks like "Fuller in Factory". There were others in that street with the same occupation. I do not have any other information about Albert as I have not looked him up before but I would be happy to look for more information about the family if you need further help. I am a full member of ancestry.com at present though I might reduce my membership when next it becomes due. I seem to have gone about as far as I can with my own research. Kind regards David -----Original Message-----
I have now completed the Settler Returns up to the end of the letter R (there is nothing for Russell's Party in the file) and hope to complete them before I go to Portugal at the end of next week. I was exceedingly grateful for the short respite while the eggsa site was down yesterday, as it gave me time to recover from transcribing the return for PARKER's Party. The man drove me mad with his correspondence and he did so again with his non standard returns! http://www.eggsa.org/1820-settlers/index.php/settler-returns I have added a couple of extra information files. PARKER did at least give me the clue for James ALLISON, by stating that he was a pensioner of the 23rd Light Dragoons, and once I had found his discharge papers it was easy enough to track down his baptism and marriage in Scotland. Although his wife is listed as Ann, she was actually Agnes MAXWELL. The Settler Handbook lists Sarah (15) and Anne (1), whereas PARKER's Return at Kew lists them the other way around. As James ALLISON wrote a letter from Bury St.Edmunds in 1819 and there is a Suffolk baptism for Sarah ALLISON in 1819, it seems clear that Sarah was in fact the youngest child. http://www.eggsa.org/1820-settlers/index.php/additional-information/a-surnames/1955-allison-james-extra-data The other file I have added is for Thomas ROWLES, leader of ROWLES' Party. Recent access to original Gloucestershire parish records revealed the family in Stroud. http://www.eggsa.org/1820-settlers/index.php/additional-information/r-surnames/1958-rowles-thomas-extra-data Sue

Hi According to 'Aided immigration from Britain to South Africa 1857 - 1867' by Esme Bull, Albert Fowler and Martha (both 18 years) came out to South Africa on board the 'Shah Jehan' in 1859. With them was Mary Fowler, single. They were going to relatives in Port Elizabeth. I would like to find out: What relationship to Albert was Mary Who were the relatives they were going to There were three 1820 Settler Fowlers - Thomas, Thomas & William, all in different parties. Perhaps one of them is a relation! Maybe someone has access to the 1851 census for England and could do a look-up for me many thanks Jenn Graham & Jennifer Lloyd [Genealogical & Historical Research] Tel: +0027 (0)21 7974875 Mobile: 0824037343 email: lacey@yebo.co.za www.southafricanfamily.com I'm not stuck, I'm Ancestrally challenged

Dear Pat, Dog biscuits survived as part of the "hard" rations to at least 1965, when I was in the SAAF. We had a cook that made the most delicious trifle with dog biscuits, custard powder, jelly powder, condensed milk and canned peaches. Needless to say he was soon transferred to the officers mess!
