Hi Rod, from an unseasonably warm England. You may need to supply more context to your request The Downs, Kent is actually a very important historic area of sea off the Kent coast. See this Wikipedia explanation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Downs There is indeed a Thomas FRANCIS, born 1820, in the 1851 census as a Royal Marine stationed at Woolwich, Greenwich, handy for accessing any ship setting sail for The Downs. Not sure this is helpful to you really. Sorry. I am going to London tomorrow and will hopefully be able to photograph the Grahamstown Journal from 1864-1870 (there may be gaps). This is quite well timed, as I have just finished going through the 1820 settlers to see if there are any more files I can add to the Extra Info section, as more original registers become accessible. If you want to contact me off list denise.genealogyresearch@gmail.com I can try and look in the death register at the Pietermaritzburg Archives. I do not know what kind of information you can get though. I normally only look up the birth registers. Never thought about the death ones. Hi Rod, Once again e-mail returned. Sorry it's taken so long. The only other info that I could find was that the plot was a half plot bought by H Jones on the 18.08.1959. His address is given as Souwest, Schoenmakerskop. At the time of Harold Alfred's death he was living at Fort England Hospital, Grahamstown. The plot is definitely 10-B-25S Regards, Carol
Thank you Denise. I wrote to the Mental Institutions in Pietermaritzburg some while ago enquiring about Gertie CLAASSEN and although I received one reply promising to help if they could ,I have not been able to find out anything further about her. If, so, would it be possible to do a quick lookup for me? I am looking for the mother's name of William Brooks born 1810 in England, married to Eva Johanna Luck. This section of their Terms and Conditions is also rather unhelpful Rule 36 - Under no circumstances may the Library's electronic collections be photographed, viewed on or downloaded onto external networks or personal equipment. I stopped in the pre-registration process at that point and closed the link to the form I was filling in. Quite how all the 'future generations' (for whom we're told everything is being carefully preserved) will actually use the preserved resources I can't see.
