Thanks All for your help with this mystery! It would appear that part of the mystery may be solved, but as so often with genealogical investigations, other cans of worms are being opened!! Here are the transcripts of the marriage record and birth registration (not baptismal record, as I said before) sent to me by Ellen Stanton: Marriage Certificate Entry #31 (it is not entirely clear to me what register this is Anglican perhaps?) Husband: Alfred EDWARDS, 24, Bachelor, Saddler, Fort Beaufort Wife: Nancy Elizabeth COOKS, 27, Spinster Date: 10 Apr 1883 Location: The House, Adelaide By: P. Davidson Witnesses: James EDWARDS and Mary Ann COOKS Form of Information of a Birth: Name: None Entered Sex: Female Date of Birth: 27 Mar 1895 Place of Birth: High Street, Grahamstown (?) Father: Alfred EDWARDS, Saddler, 37, England (place of birth) Mother: Annie Elizabeth EDWARDS, formerly COOKS, Dressmaker, 30, Cape Colony Married: 11 Apr 1883 Previous Issue: 2 sons and 2 daughters Abode: Adelaide So, from this we now know that Alfred EDWARDS was NOT a descendent of the 1820 Settler EDWARDS family, but was born in England! End of that mystery! However, it would appear that the marriage record and the birth record don't really match up. Firstly, the marriage certificate has the bride's name as Nancy Elizabeth COOKS, not Annie (or Anna), which is how the mother of all the children (William Percy b. 1884, Alice Jane b. 1885, Cecil James b. 1886, Ivy May b. 1888, and Daughter 3 b. 1895) Secondly, on the marriage certificate, HE is 24 and SHE is 27, and then in the birth record 12 years later, HE is 37 and SHE is 30. Not only is the maths wrong, but Annie is younger than Alfred, but Nancy is older than Alfred! Could Nancy have died, and then Alfred went on to marry Nancy's younger sister, Annie? Well the argument against that would be that the date of marriage on the birth record is one day different to the date of marriage on the marriage certificate! It's possible that Nancy was her real name, but she preferred to be called Annie (or Anna), although on an official form like a birth record, I'd have thought the mother's real name would need to be entered, even if the baptismal records in the parishes used her nickname (unless, of course, she changed her name officially from Nancy to Annie!) However, this doesn't get around the fact that their ages don't match up between the marriage certificate and the birth record. To add to all this, the death record of Annie Elizabeth EDWARDS (née COOK) has her age as 52 years in 1913. That also doesn't match the above ages, for Annie or Nancy! <Sigh> I feel like we've found some jigsaw pieces that are a very, very close fit, but not quite right, but we're trying to force them in nevertheless!!! Dear All I consider that I have had a very unsatisfactory exchange with the British Library concerning e- access to those parts of the website already providing digital material! I have now given them one month to reply to my second email but clearly they cannot spare the time to do so. I think it's reasonable now to share the correspondence - as I promised some months ago - with this list. Perhaps all on the list who would be interested should start raising this issue direct with Roly Keating the Chief Executive. I had hoped the fairly new regime would be digitally more go-ahead. Best wishes Hazel Dear Jerry Many thanks for your reply to my email addressed to the Chief Executive. Of course I understand your point about collection security. However, there seems no logical reason why those who cannot come to London (and make the collection insecure) should not become members of a special category of "distance readers" with permission only to access the material, to which I referred in my earlier email, which is already on the web. It is difficult to imagine why this should not be affordable and why it should not be considered as an immediate ( rather than "under active consideration" - weasel words if I may say so) pilot leading to a wider scheme in the future. As I have pointed out, other major research libraries are acting in this regard rather than merely aspiring. "Can do" attracts so much more respect these days than deferment. I remain hopeful that you will be able to send me a much more satisfactory response to this last point to share with my networks of family historians overseas. Yours sincerely Hazel Dakers Dear Hazel I am writing in response to your email to the Chief Executive dated 8th April which has been forwarded to me as the senior manager responsible for the Library's Reader Registration policies. To provide some context, the Library's Reader Registration processes are driven largely by the requirements of collection security; namely, to ensure that the Library holds valid details pertaining to those accessing its collections. Until recently, the view has been taken that the only way to satisfactorily validate those details is to see original documents as proof of both identity and address. However, as you point out, the world is becoming increasingly digital and the Library must find ways to successfully accommodate that shift. To that end, and as well as striving to make ever more electronic content available remotely, steps have been taken in recent years to facilitate both on-line pre-registration for Readers and more recently to accept both electronic and print documentation as proof of a Reader's address. As it stands, however, these changes still require all Readers to present these documents in person either at our London site or in Yorkshire and, to your main point, access to remote electronic resources is therefore not possible unless this step is completed. As you suggest, a logical next step may therefore be for the Library to permit the Reader Registration process to be completed entirely on-line. To that end, an initial feasibility study was undertaken late last year to assess the potential options available and as a consequence of which the proposal remains under active consideration. However, as I'm sure you will appreciate, the Library must be able to demonstrate that any proposed solution would have no adverse effect on collection security and that it would also be affordable. Although I can give no guarantee at this stage what the outcome of this work may be, I hope the fact that this issue is at least under consideration provides some reassurance as to the Library's future aspirations in this regard. Yours Sincerely Jerry Shillito From: Hazel Dakers [mailto:hazel.dakers@blueyonder.co.uk] Sent: 08 April 2015 18:04 To: Keating, Roly Subject: Access to BL's e-resources Dear Mr Keating I have been a reader at the BL for many years - and in fact am a retired member of staff. So the issue I am raising with you does not impact upon me personally but is depriving family historian friends abroad of available digitised research information. I have a number of overseas friends who would dearly love access to the resources online at <https://eresources.remote.bl.uk:2443/login> https://eresources.remote.bl.uk:2443/login However, these are only available to registered readers. Is it possible now to register as a reader online or by sending the necessary documents by email? A number of South African researchers I know would benefit enormously from access to the Grahams Town Journal and some other listed newspapers but are not able to come to London to register as BL readers. These items are not available through my sub to www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk <http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk> Other national libraries seem able to make comparable items available to e-registered readers eg <http://www.nla.gov.au/app/eresources/> http://www.nla.gov.au/app/eresources/ In the 2nd millenium it should be possible to make a separate e-registration that limits those registered to using online resources - if full registration by distance is not possible. I hope very much that you will find a means of facilitating wider electronic access to the BL's resources and look forward to your response on this issue. Kind regards Hazel Dakers

Hi All Does anyone have any info on if and how the father of Cecil James EDWARDS fits into any of the known EDWARDS lines? Here are the relevant transcriptions: Fort Beaufort Methodist Baptisms Entry #700 Child: Cecil James EDWARDS Parents: Alfred and Anna Elizabeth of Adelaide Born: 19 Dec 1886 Baptized: 12 Jan 1888 Adelaide Anglican (Christ Church) Marriages Entry #159 Husband: Cecil James EDWARDS, 25, Bachelor, Baker, Adelaide Wife: Annie Catherine ERASMUS, 20, Spinster, Adelaide Date: 26 Nov 1912 After Banns Parents Consent Witnesses: C L Sumner, D E Erasmus, Osmond Cookson So, any info on Alfred (possibly also referred to as Alfie) EDWARDS and/or his wife, Anna Elizabeth, will be greatly appreciated. By the way, my wife's uncle, who is a grandson of Cecil James EDWARDS, tells me that Cecil insisted he was born in Dordrecht. This could be true, but he was definitely baptised in Fort Beaufort, and his parents were from Adelaide. Perhaps Anna Elizabeth's parents lived in or near Dordrecht, and she went "home" for the birth? Regards Mike Wright www.albany1820.com <http://www.albany1820.com>

His parents were Father:Alfred Stephen EDWARDS born 29 July 1833 in Fort Beaufort died 19 April 1870 (the same year his son was born, the last of five siblings - other sibling names avail if you want them, but I have no spouses or offspring) Mother: Rhoda KING b 15 Aug 1836 ;d 1 Sep 1937, Frere Hosp EL (Rhoda married again after those 5 children, to John THOMPSON.) I have more ancestor info on these people but not the offspring info you have. But the dates look rational for the younger Alfred Stephen EDWARDS I have, to possibly be the father of your Cecil James EDWARDS To link the ones I have back to 1820 settlers: My Alfred Stephen Edwards the elder one was the son of James EDWARDS and wife Ann THOMAS, 1820 settlers. & Rhoda KING was the daughter of Joseph KING (Jr) b 9 Aug 1808 and wife Ann BRADLEY both 1820 settlers. (I have more dates etc if these look like a fit.) (I know that the Sumner family was friendly with the Edwards family. They also intermarry in the 1880s. Methodist and Anglican church events both were common for those two families.) PLEASE... LET ME KNOW IF YOU THINK THIS IS A LINK? Good afternoon, My cousin would like to go to a Home Affairs office to get some ancestor's marriage certificates. Could anyone advise me where the Home Affairs Office for marriage certificates, is, in Pretoria. Your help would be most appreciated. Kind regards and thank you Sybil (sybilbj@gmail.com)
Until I was contacted by an 1877 Gonubie Settlers' descendent I had no idea that the little booklet I had of the "Gonubie Presbyterian Church 1886 - 1986 - A short history of the Church and the people compiled by Natalie KEMP." might be very hard to get hold of. In case others might be looking for it - or didn't know it existed - I've gone through my copy and below this email is a list of every name that appears in the booklet. If anyone would like to have an e-copy of the page/s on which a name appears please let me know. I have also scanned in the entire booklet, but it is a large file and if you would like the whole copy it would be better sent via Dropbox. Hi Patricia, et al, You sent me this document many years ago, for which I thank you. I scanned your original, and tidied up some of the scan and saved the result in a pdf file. Before you go spending your hard earned savings in posting paper copies throughout the world, I made the pdf file available for download off my 1820settlers.com website. Go to www.1820Settlers.comSelect 1820 Settler GenealogiesSelect the Cemeteries link - we actually just want to get to the Media Drop downs on the top right!Click the Media tab and scroll down to the Documents and click that link. The Granny Kirk pdf doc is the third one down. Click the link.It should now open up in Adobe Reader on your pc.Save, Print or just read it in place.Enjoy. ps. there are a few other docs there as well! more to come.... -- Paul Tanner-Tremaine Hampshire, England email : eighteentwenty@btinternet.com website : www.1820Settlers.com On Saturday, 23 May 2015, 10:49, norma.patrick8 via <south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com> wrote: Would love a copy.
