    1. [ZA-EC] Passenger Lists
    2. djthorn via
    3. Hi all Listers, Can someone tell me how I can obtain a list of the passengers who travelled on the "Aurifera" which sailed from Liverpool with 164 adults and 62 children on 24 April 1858. I believe that my g-grandmother. Mary Jane Thorn and her daughter, Mary Anderton Thorn were on that ship. I see that the passenger list is stored in the Cape Archives as IBC 6-1. Can these list be viewed online? Thanks for any help David Thorn - Nelson Bay Australia.

    3. Transcribed from originals at The British Library http://www.eggsa.org/newspapers/index.php/grahamstown-journal/1226-grahamstown-journal-1867-4-october-to-december That completes the transcriptions of the images I took on my last visit to The British Library. I'll be off on our annual trip to France and Italy the week after next, but our son hopes to be moving house in London at the end of July so I expect I'll be up there quite a bit and can order in the next batch. 1. [ZA-EC] eGGSA Passenger Lists Updated
    2. Sue Mackay via
    3. Posted on behalf of Richard Ball - Sue ---- Richard Wolfaardt's team of transcribers has completed the transcription of the passenger lists contained in the Cape Archives classs PWD 2-753, consisting arrivals at Cape Town, between December 1873 and 1876, of 71 ships and 669 immigrant names. These particular listings do not include the names of wives and children when they accompanied male immigrants but do mention that they did so and usually give the age and sex of the children. The surnames of immigrants on this list can be found on here: http://www.eggsa.org/arrivals/surnames_included_in_PWD-2-753.html These transcriptions are included in the eGGSA Passenger List Database which now contains details of 1794 voyages and 79,184 passenger names between 1850 and 1911. http://www.eggsa.org/arrivals/eGGSA%20Passenger%20Project.html Many thanks to Alta Griffiths for photographing the documents, to the Western Cape Archives for permission to do so and to the transcribers: James Anderson, John Deare, Basil G Royston, Ray Pitt and Richard Wolfaardt. With many thanks, Richard Richard BallNorfolk, Englandhttp://www.eggsa.org

    3. Hi Rod, According to 'Tharfield, an Eastern Cape Farm' by C Thorpe, page 22,..." it appears that the farm was in the hands of the Bowker family - Septimus, James, then Henry Mitford Barberton who in Oct 6th 1913 sold his half to Alfred White, and Aug 19th 1913 George Lorraine White sold his half, also to Alfred White, all descendants of Miles Bowker.  Alfred White transfered the estate to Thomas Guard Webb on Jan 28th 1926, in part exchange for Burnt Kraal, plus a cash adjustment." James Randall appears to have taken over Olive Burn in 1840, the original Bowker homestead.  How long they kept it is unknown, but last year in May it was in the hands of Mike and Ann White. 3. Hi Mike I worry about this attachment .... If your Alfred was born 1870 - he has suddenly become a 14 year old father!! I would agree though that the wife of an Alfred was the mother of these children as per your Death Notice... Which Alfred??? There is an Alfred [Sidney] EDWARDS b Abt. 1854 to John & Sarah nee MOORCROFT living in the Winterberg/Fort Beaufort region. I dont have a reference to this sorry... John was s.o. James & Ann nee THOMAS.... otherwise, not further suggestions.. 635 EDWARDS William Percy Alfie and Annie Elizabeth of Fort Beaufort 1884/04/20 1884/05/18 Fort Beaufort Chapel 673 EDWARDS Alice Jane Alfred and Anna Elizabeth of Fort Beaufort 1885/10/09 1886/05/26 700 EDWARDS Cecil James Alfred and Anna Elizabeth of Adelaide 1886/12/19 1888/01/12 Birth Registrations: Grahamstown - Entry #143 A child born 27 Mar 1895 Take care Lynn -----Original Message----- From: Mike Wright via Sent: Sunday, May 31, 2015 9:26 AM To: south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com ; south-africa-immigrants-british@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ZA-EC] Cecil James EDWARDS I believe I may have discovered Alfred's wife's death notice. Details are: Name: Annie Elizabeth EDWARDS (born COOK) Abode: Adelaide Age: 52 years (born in the Cape Province) Marital Status: Divorced Occupation: Maternity Nurse Date of Death: 17 Jun 1913 Place of Death: Sterkstroom Intended Place of Burial: Adelaide Cause of Death: Heart Failure Signed by: C.J. Edwards (son of the deceased) C.J. Edwards must surely be "my" Cecil James EDWARDS, and most of the other details tie in well. Her age at death would make her dob around 1861, so if Alfred Stephen EDWARDS (b. 6 Mar 1870) was her husband, she would have been about 25 years old to his 16 years old when Cecil James was born!! Tracking back 9 months from Cecil's date of birth (19 Dec 1886) would place his conception in about March 1870, so just after Alfred turned sweet sixteen, IF he was indeed the father! Does any of this ring any more bells with anyone? COOK researchers, for example? There appears to have been another child born to Alfred and Annie Elizabeth, baptised in 1895, as per Ellen Stanton's listing (father, mother, date of child's baptism): LDS Microfilm #1926277 Birth Certificates: 1895 Item 3: Albany #143 Alfred EDWARDS, Annie Elizabeth COOKS?, 3/27/1895 Regards Mike Wright <http://t.signaledue.com/e1t/c/5/f18dQhb0S7lC8dDMPbW2n0x6l2B9nMJW7t5XYg1q0zH qW8p-TcR63BrClW2BW4zb56dTLQf9ddHv-02?t=http%3a%2f%2fwww.albany1820.com&si=64 18478855094272&pi=e6bb4a0a-1fd4-4993-8ddd-d3f4addaf178> www.albany1820.com From: Mike Wright [mailto:mike@albany1820.com] Sent: 30 May 2015 09:11 To: 'south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com'; 'south-africa-immigrants-british@rootsweb.com' Subject: Cecil James EDWARDS Hi All Does anyone have any info on if and how the father of Cecil James EDWARDS fits into any of the known EDWARDS lines?
