Hallo Lister, I have not worked through this list for a long time. I would like to respond to your e-mail, if my info is still of help to you. I did a quick look up through my lists, and could only find a Friederich/Friedrich Scmidt, who immigrated during 1858 to South Africa. He was born in Kutzerow, 41 years of age, wife Caroline (37) Friedrich(14), Wilhelmine(8) Johanna (3). Who came to South Africa on the Peter Godeffroy. If any of these names appear in your family, it might be worthwhile looking at a different spelling of the surname:- Scmidt instead of Smith. Regards. Trudie Marais Hello Lister I need to find lists of any german immigration to SA between 1858 to 1881. I am trying to locate the ship my gggranfather was on when he landed in SA. His death notice says he was born in Germany but his nationality was British so I am assuming he became British when he landed in SA. My gggranfather name was William Frederick Smith.
Good afternoon, Try SCHMIDT. If you go ogle the passenger lists for the 1858/59 German Settlers you might pick up some info. If you are SA try your local library for the book 'For Men Must Work' by EFG SCHNELL who gives an insight into these settlers as he based his thesis on them. In 2010 Bernard Brown of Dallas, Texas, posted a request for information about the above on Genealogy.com. Does anyone know whether it is possible for me to contact Bernard directly? Many thanks and regards, Brian+.
There may be a few more postings to come. I have been away quite a bit over the summer but am now home. My son in London is moving house and needs a few things, so I am going up this weekend and hope to photograph a couple more years of the Grahamstown Journal while I am there. Hi John, Thank you for the information provided, and as describe by you, a treasure-trove of information can be found in the Death Notice. To prove your point, Johannes Matthys de Beer *20 December 1857 ~25 January 1858 +19 January 1923 x Johanna Christina Pretorius * 22-11-1869, the Death Notice entries show his children were baptised in Pretoria, he died in Regents Park Johannesburg, and was married in Krugersdorp. Fortunately I live in Cape Town, and have found most of the Death Notices relating to the members mentioned in my previous mail. It is with the marriage certificate that I find difficulty in tracing as the wives are not always from the same area as the husband. Where would the marriage take place, at the brides residence, or the groom residence? Thank you for sharing information with me, it is much appreciated! Regards, Malcolm de Beer Sea Point Cape Town. Hello Malcolm As you live in Cape Town, if you haven't done so already, I suggest you visit the Cape Archives, which is still at the old Roeland Street Prison, I think. You can check on line for references and arrange to view the documents and get copies. Death Notices are very useful as they should name surviving spouses and pre-deceased spouses. Usually the place of marriage is named, sometimes even the date. Wills name spouses too. Estate files, most of which include death notices, often offer much more information about the deceased person's family. Check on line for the references here: http://www.national.archives.gov.za/index.htm click on: Search National Automated Archival Information Retrieval System I suggest you choose the KAB option (for Cape Archives) Type each name on a separate line. Best wishes, John John Powell

Good afternoon all, I'm busy doing the research of our church here in South Africa. I see there is a horde of information available on Ancestry but as I do not have an account with them, I am not able to access these. If SKS would assist me, I would be eternally thankful. The family I am looking at is SCHLAPHOFF, specifically George Heinrich Wilhelm, Christian Heinrich Franz and Jock (Johannes) SCHLAPHOFF. If there are any documents or records available or transcribed that could assist me, that would be helpful.
