I am looking for the Goodman family who were certainly in the E. Cape at one time. I know only of siblings William Erastus Goodman (1842-1917) and his sister Sophia Ann Goodman (1837-97). Sophia's marriage record indicates she came from Cornwall. William had at least two children - Mabel who died young and Vivian Erastus. I believe he was also married three times - Johanna Elizabeth Green, Maria Barbara van Amstel de Wet and Ethel J.M. Lowe. Sophia was married to Raphael Daniel Norden with whom she had 11 children. I am particularly keen to identify the Goodman parents and further siblings. I know from MD Nash that a Henry and Elizabeth Goodman were in Osler's Party and that Osler came from Falmouth (Cornwall). Nash also states "No mention has been found in colonial records of the presence of ..Henry Goodman at the Cape, and ..may have been replaced at the last minute without the change being reflected in the sailing list". I do have a few NAAIRS references which I hope to follow up if I do another SA trip in March 2016. Have just been trying to fit the TROLLOPEs into the picture. I cannot find them listed under 1820 settlers names, nor any of the pre- or post- settlers either. Also looking at Paul T-Ts site and although he has TROLLIP and TROLLOPE families the latter are all descended from one of two TROLLIPs who changed their name to TROLLOPE. Whether this would include all the TROLLOPEs in SA or not I cannot tell but I would be very interested in trying to track them all back to a common ancestor. It would certainly help if Yvonne could give us any additional info on her g-father eg. full names, date of birth, spouse, siblings etc. Paddy On 16 August 2015 at 09:38, Pat Brown <mistyhaven@gmail.com> wrote: > Hi Pat & Yvonne, > The BROWNs (and hence indirectly to you Pat) are definitely closely > linked but the spelling was TROLLIP, I know that spelling often changed but > unless we can find at least one person with your spelling, Yvonne, who is > definitely coupled to ours it will be problematic melding the families. Hello TROLLIP aficionados I have a 10 000 plus database of South African TROLLIPs, so feel free to ask any TROLLIP related questions. I am always on the look-out for more Afrikaans TROLLIPs, as they have been less rigorously documented.. All the South African TROLLIPS/TROLLOPES/TROLLOPS are related. There is a smaller branch arising from William Lambert TROLLIP b. 1826 who is potentially unrelated but he comes from the same area of England as Joseph TROLLIP, the South African progenitor. To help Yvonne, we must first give her relatives their correct names. Harold would be found on most family trees as Stephen Harold TROLLIP. Yvonne's father's full name is John Samuel Glen TROLLIP. If Pat could send me Yvonne's email address off-List I would be happy to contact her and offer what assistance I can. Hallo Saul The new Electoral Act (act 73 of 1998) determines that the Voters Roll may only be used for election purposes and declares it an offence to use the Voters Roll for any other purpose. Voters Roll for the period prior to 1998 can be found in various repositories. The most useful of these, because they are indexed alphabetically for the whole country, are the 1972 Voters Roll and the 1984 Voters Roll, The 1972 Voters Roll is available in printed form in the Pretoria Archives and the 1984 Voters Roll is available in Microfiche format in the library of the LDS in Parktown and also , I believe, in the library of GISA in Stellenbosch. The 1984 Voters Roll is currently being transcribed by GSSA and we have completed 2,5 million on the just more than 3 million names - we however are progressing at a rate of about 20,000 names per month and desperately need more volunteers to wrap up the last 500,000 names. Hi Pat & Yvonne, The BROWNs (and hence indirectly to you Pat) are definitely closely linked but the spelling was TROLLIP, I know that spelling often changed but unless we can find at least one person with your spelling, Yvonne, who is definitely coupled to ours it will be problematic melding the families. I have 86 TROLLIPs in my database, but no Harolds. Let's hope someone else has a definite link.. Hi Rod. I do not know who the "Lister" was who asked for the advice. It was rather a very old e-mail, so as you can see in my opening sentence I said "if my info is still of help to you." Most of the people who had to do the writing were English. They could not understand the German accent very well, thus they spelled the names the way they heard or understood it, thus the anglicising. The German tongue fell very heavy on the English ear! Kaffraria belonged to England. By changing their names to the "English Way" they felt more part of the new country! You will often find in Germany a child is known on his second name if his father or brother have the same names. I often see that there is eg. A Heinrich Johann (may have died, the parents repeat the name) or another sibling:- Heinrich Carl, or the father/grandfather could also be Heinrich Johann. Another brother may be Heinrich Friedrich, then they would be known on their 2nd/third name. Hope this might be of help to you too. Regards. Trudie Just checked the passenger lists. On the. Wandrahm there was an August SCHMIDT and a Michael SCHMIDT both from Prussia On the Wilhelmsburg there was an Àdolph SCHMIDT from Zerrenthien. On the Peter Godeffroy there was Friedrich SCHMIDT from Tenkau >From my own research into my family who arrived the first ship in July 1858 I found many instances where names were changed for reasons I cannot find out. My own gggrandfather was born August Hermann GEBHARDT but in all documents I have seen he is referred to as only Herman. His son, when finalising his estate had to swear an avidavid that his father's names were in fact August Hermann. All his sons anglacised their christian names making it difficult to plot the family. Therefore I suggest you record you ancester as Wilhelm Friederich SCHMIDT. The spelling of Friederich may vary from family to family. I have a Frederick Wilhelm in my database b 22 June 1873 son of Matheus SCHMIDT and Carolina Louisa no name. I would be glad to let you have more on the family, although this is not my main area of research. I would like to respond to your e-mail, if my info is still of help to you. I did a quick look up through my lists, and could only find a Friederich/Friedrich Scmidt, who immigrated during 1858 to South Africa. He was born in Kutzerow, 41 years of age, wife Caroline (37) Friedrich(14), Wilhelmine(8) Johanna (3). Who came to South Africa on the Peter Godeffroy. If any of these names appear in your family, it might be worthwhile looking at a different spelling of the surname:- Scmidt instead of Smith. Regards. Trudie Marais Hello Lister I need to find lists of any german immigration to SA between 1858 to 1881. I am trying to locate the ship my gggranfather was on when he landed in SA. His death notice says he was born in Germany but his nationality was British so I am assuming he became British when he landed in SA. My gggranfather name was William Frederick Smith. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to SOUTH-AFRICA-EASTERN-CAPE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
Hi All My great grandfather was one of a great many HEIMANN cousins to emigrate to South Africa. He did so in 1860 and whilst his birth name was Jacob he was known as Julius. Confusingly there were two more contemporaneous Julius Heimann living in SA! My Jewish family came from LUEGDE near Hameln of Pied Piper fame. On my Great Grandmother's side of the family there was a Sarah Catharina SMIT b. 1858 Caernarvon/Victoria West who married her brother. Earlier in my family's history my Gt Grandmother's Grandmother, Fanny Nussbaum had left an unsuccessful marriage in Nieder Auler, HESSEN to join relations going to SA - probably in the mid 1830's. It is said that the success of the MOSENTHAL brothers in building up a trading empire in SA encouraged other Germans to emigrate there.
