    1. [ZA-EC] Grahamstown Journal later editions??
    2. Craig & Christine
    3. Hi Folks, I know that there are transcribed journals. But I seem to recall that someone said that the later journals are held in England someplace. I would love to read excerpts from 1870 and up. These don't seem to be available. Does anyone know why and how can I find them? Thanks so much. Christine (Researching Bell/Heber)

    2. Gail Röthlin
    3. Yvette, Do you have any idea where in Scotland your ancestors originated, and are you sure they spelt it PATTERSON and not PATERSON? Do you have any dates for your PATTERSONS? I thought I might have your James PATTERSON among my settlers, but you say Charles Frederick Watson was born ca. 1884. That would mean his mother was born - at the very latest - 1868. Was she born in Scotland? Have you found James & Jenny (probably Jane) in Scotland? Regards, Gail

    3. Wow, thanks so much Nikki, this is the first time I have got anything about my great-great-grandfather Patterson, I do have him as J Patterson married Jenny (no surname), and came from Scotland. I think Katberg probably included Hogsback, so it sounds right. They had a daughter Mary, who married my great-grandfather Charles Frederick Watson who was also at Hogsback (found his name in the Forestry log book there). Their son, my grandfather, also Charles Frederick Watson, was born in about 1884 (I thought) and always told us he went to primary school at Hogsback – dates work in pretty well? Later the Watson’s moved to Thaba’nchu (Freestate) to start the forestry Plantations there. My mother’s was named Enid Boyd Watson and we never knew where the Boyd came from! Thanks so much, I am so grateful! Bye, Yvette Also take a look at - www.wildenvironment.co.za From: Nikki Sent: Monday, October 08, 2012 4:05 PM To: south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ZA-EC] PATTERSON Cape Civil Service List 1900 Hi Yvette There is a J. PATTERSON who was the Forester for Fort Cunynghame, Stutterheim. he was first appointed Mar 1 1886 and appointed to the present post July 1 1898. His salary was 132 pounds per annum. also a James Boyd PATTERSON who was Forester for Katberg First date of appointment Nov 1 1897 Appointed to present post Mar 1 1899. His salary was R100 per annum. 1. [ZA-EC] Cape Town undertakers/funeral directors (J.S. Hoeg)
    2. John Wynne
    3. Hi. Does anyone recognise a firm of Cape Town undertakers or funeral directors called J.S. Hoeg? Their name was listed on a 1948 burial record for Maitland Cemetery of someone who died at Sea Point. I know it's a long time, but was wondering if they were still in business. My grandfather died in New York State in 1957, and the funeral director had masses of information in his records, regarding employment, cause of death, relatives, immigration history, and who attended his funeral. I know I got lucky with that one, but would be keen to find out if the Cape Town company still exists and, if so, does it have any records still. Best wishes, John Wynne Cheshire, UK

    1. [ZA-EC] Graham's Town Electoral Roll 1853 (Cape Frontier Times) A-C
    2. Sue Mackay
    3. The eagle-eyed amongst you will have noticed that my last posting from the Cape Frontier Times only covered July and August 1853, as opposed to the whole quarter. This is because the newspaper of 30 August 1853 contained a whole page listing those who had registered to vote in Graham's Town. I thought I would post these separately in chunks, and then add any extracts for September to the following quarter once I reach them. To avoid mistakes I am going steadily through the list, so bear with me. Be aware that the list is alphabetical only up to a point, ie all the As are together but they are not alphabetical within that letter. I have typed the list as given rather than attempting to put it in alphabetical order - the only changes I have made are to put the surname in upper case and to add a full stop after each name. This is in case the formatting loses the line breaks, as sometimes seems to happen with list mail. Once I have transcribed the entire list it will, of course, appear on the eGGSA site in its entirety as part of the Cape Frontier Times transcriptions, probably as a table.
