I will tell my story as simply as possible and hope for a response!! My father in law JACOBUS CONELIUS CORDIER BORN 10 OCT 1928 died 4 June 2012 - According to his baptism certificate his mother was ESTER FRANCINA JANSEN VAN RENSBURG she died when my father was 21 +- 1949 in P.E. I only have a name and a wedding photo – no other relatives or any info on where they stayed or were she was buried. HIS father was JOHN ADAM CORDIER, born in 13 June 1899 he died 1 Nov 1989 in Hummasdorp P.E - HE WORKED AT SHOOKS AND BOXED AND RETIRED THERE IN 1962 – I HAVE THE CLOCK THEY GAVE HIM ON RETIREMENT. I know my father has/had a brother in AUSTRALIA NAMED WILFRED CORDIER but he never contacted the family again after he left in 1959 – 1960 I believe he was born between 1930 – 1935 – AS THIS IS THE ONLY CLOSE RELATIVE HE WILL MOST POSSIBLY BE ABLE TO GIVE INFO ON HIS MOTHER - WHERE SHE WAS BORN / BURIED I am currently trying to get info on John Adam Cordier parents, siblings and Ester Francina Jansen van Rensburg parents and siblings I am desperately trying to find someone to help trace WILFRED CORDIER or any info on JOHN ADAM CORDIER AND HIS WIFE ESTER FRANCINA JANSEN VAN RENSBURG. If you could help I would greatly appreciate it. I attach a photo of Wilfred around 1955 and a baptism certificate of JACOBUS CORNELIUS CORDIER for your records. Kind regards

Thank you very much indeed Sue, you are really keeping my nose to the grindstone with all your recent submissions.... It's been wonderful being able to add so much additional information into the files. We may not always say thank you as often as we should; but your name is up in shining lights! Best wishes, Tombi ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sue Mackay" <sue@sausalito.demon.co.uk> To: <south-africa-immigrants-british@rootsweb.com>; <south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com>; <south-africa@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 10, 2012 10:39 AM Subject: [ZA-EC] Extracts from the Cape Frontier Times Sep-Dec 1853 Transcribed from CO53/20 at the National Archives in Kew, London 13 September 1853 A report has reached town that the notorious Hans BRANDER died lately in the neighbourhood of the Kei of the wounds received in the engagement in the Fish River Bush, between the police, under Walter CURRIE, and his rebel band. UMLANGENI the prophet is also reported to be dead. At the late interview between His Excellency and the Gaika chiefs, MACOMO complained that the land assigned to them was too small for them to live in, and all the chiefs were dissatisfied, when the Governor assured them that there was no prospect of getting back the Amatolas. 18 October 1853 DIED after a brief illness at Colesberg on the 4th October 1853, aged 27 years and 5 months, Mr. John Daniel GIBBON, only son of Mr. Edward GIBBON, of the same place, leaving a widow and two children to deplore their irreparable loss. 25 October 1853 To the Electors of the Eastern Province Five important constituencies of the Eastern Province have, according to the provisions of the Constitution Ordinance, invited Mr. Henry BLAINE to offer himself as a Candidate for a Seat in the Legislative Council; and in placing the names of his requisitionists prominently before the Electors of the Eastern Province, Mr. BLAINE's Committee feel that any commendation they could bestow upon that gentleman could not add to the general estimation in which his character is held even in quarters where he is personally unknown. The publication of the names of the influential body of gentlemen, who have thus spontaneously expressed their conviction that Mr. BLAINE is qualified in all respects to do justice to the interests of this Province in the important position in the Councils of this Colony to which they propose to call him, renders it scarcely necessary for the Committee to urge any recommendation in his favor. It is, however, due to Mr. BLAINE, in support of his claims to the suffrages of the Electors to state, that he is at the head of one of the principal mercantile houses in the Eastern Province, and therefore deeply interested in its prosperity - and that his a Frontier resident of some 14 years standing, during which period he has devoted his time and his means to the promotion of every public measure that has been set on foot for the advancement of the community - that he has been a zealous and successful supporter of all the public institutions of this place (some of which he has been instrumental in establishing), having for their object the benefit of the whole Eastern Province. It will at once be acknowledged, that the influence of Mr. BLAINE, as evidenced by the Requisitions addressed to him from different parts of this Province, is neither local - nor is it that of party or sect - but it is an influence which wholly derives its strength from the unbounded confidence which is felt in his character as a private gentleman - in his unimpeachable integrity and straightforwardness as a man of business, and his ability and independence as a public man. Such are the acknowledged claims of this gentleman to the suffrages of the Electors of the Eastern Province, who, his friends feel assured, will not fail to show by their votes at the coming Election that they know how to appreciate the private excellence and public worth of a gentleman, into whose hands they may intrust their interests with perfect confidence. Why not carry the likeness further and allow the stripes, as in the case of mules, to run all over their coats? Surely he who dresses himself like a mule must be "next to a donkey" and accordingly cannot make himself too ridiculous. A sharp young friend of ours, who has studied heraldry merely to joke upon it, calls these thick heavy stripes "the bar sinisters of taste". 22 November 1853 It now turns out that the public chest at Fort Beaufort was stolen and robbed by no less a personage than the district gaoler, being a colored man named CRAWFORD. His accomplices were three soldiers of the 91st, who were in gaol, charged with stealing a sheep, during which the four committed the robbery. The soldiers were however acquitted, and had retuned to Fort Fordyce, where they have since been apprehended. The thieves were discovered owing to a Hottentot, who had also been acquitted of some charge at the Circuit Court, and who, it appears, knew something about the robbery, having under the influence of liquor given a clue to the discovery of the perpetrators. 29 November 1853 To Let That valuable Agricultural and Grazing Farm called Rokeby Park The property of Geo. His friends will be glad to learn that he is now in a fair way of recovery. 27 December 1853 Another Village on the Eastern Frontier The Farm known as the Mineral Baths, the property of Mr. BEVAN, and situated about eighteen miles from Port Elizabeth, between Graaff-Reinet and Graham's Town, is announced to be sold at an early date, as will be seen by an advertisement which we publish today. The farm will be subdivided, and about 30 erven - the greater portion of which will be water-erven - will be submitted for competition. I'm not sure where you live. You may have heard about holdings in England because of my transcriptions of the Grahamstown Journal, but these only go up to 1853. This is because I have access to original newspapers held at the National Archives in Kew, but later editions are held at the British Newspaper Library in Colindale http://www.bl.uk/reshelp/inrrooms/blnewspapers/newsrr.html where they don't allow digital cameras, so any transcriptions would have to be done on site - a slow process. I don't live in London so transcribing the later editions is not really an option for me. The British Library has copies of GTJ (not totally complete) up to 1864, after which I believe it is listed as The Journal. I live in hope that they will be digitalised as part of the process the BL has initiated of putting all its newspapers online, but I suspect the South African ones are a long way down the priority list. However, there are of course copies of GTJ in South Africa in various repositories. The Cory Library in Grahamstown springs to mind, but I am sure there must be copies held elsewhere. Hi Folks, I know that there are transcribed journals. But I seem to recall that someone said that the later journals are held in England someplace. I would love to read excerpts from 1870 and up. These don't seem to be available. Does anyone know why and how can I find them? Thanks so much. Christine (Researching Bell/Heber)
Hi Terry I have a MOSS married to a Currie in my tree. They had 5 children, but none of the names are the one you are looking for. If you are interested let me know. Hi Lynette, I have had such difficulty tracing back on the Phillips family, I haven't even managed to establish how or when or with whom she arrived in South Africa. Do you know where Mary married Herbert Cornelius Hunt? The Cornelius name is very "Afrikaans" I have a cousin in the UK who is also researching, I'll see if he can come up with something.
