I wonder if someone can explain how to trace the 1891 map of Komgha district (I have a list of the farm numbers and owners from on 2005 thread on this list but need to see whereabouts it is). I am not sure what the boundaries of Komgha district were - my farm is listed under a few below 'near Gonubie River' - for practical purposes is this vague info all I'll get anyway, and if so where does anyone know more or less where this would refer to? I then would like to find out about farms in the Indwe / Dordrecht area in the 1890s. My search of KAB showed farms being transferred from Wodehouse district and Elliot district around 1919. Indwe was very new in 1890 - but where would farms around 1894- 1900 or so be registered? Where and how would I look for this information? Thank you. No Problem ...it came from our list archives in 2007 done by Ellen Stanton, but will pop it through to you. Hi Cliff In 2007 Ellen Published a lot of Bennett info from databases ...I have forwarded the email to you offlist so you can go through the BENNETT info. Regards Cheri -----Original Message----- From: south-africa-eastern-cape-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:south-africa-eastern-cape-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of cliff bennett Sent: Monday, 22 October 2012 8:21 AM To: south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com Subject: [ZA-EC] Bennett Family. Hi Sybil, My Great Grandfather was a Joseph Bennett and travelled out here from the UK with a brother Sidney. From what I can establish it must have been around 1860. He had twin sons who were subsequenly also named Joseph{my granfather} and Sidney. My eldest Uncle was also Joseph and his eldest son Joseph. Both GGF and Sidney settled in the Graaf Reinet area and farmed. ButGGF soon realised that he was not cut out to be a farmer. He moved to East London and became a shop keeper. With the death of his first wife he remarried in 1884. at that time he was 42. He died there in 1912 and is buried there. My GGM Anna Bennett nee Pommet was of Hugenout extraction and ended up in a DR. Bernardo Home in Essex. She was sent out here to look after my GGF family after the death of of his wife. She was only 16 at the time. Dr Bernado gave her an inscribed Bible when she left the Home. It is in the safe keeping of my cousin Mark in East London. My cousins and I are also trying to trace our family. From what we know we originated from Austrey near Tamworth which is in Staffordshire. We have a cousin , Julian Bennett {from the Sidney side} still farming in Graaf Reinet. Unfortunately he is not even interested in discussing the family and mearly refered me to the archives in the Old Prison in Cape Town. As with most of these searches you never have much to go on when you start. I do not know if it a mere coincidence with first names, as I know at that time Joseph was a very popular boys name. My maternal GF was also named Joseph. My cousins, Irene and Helen have far more info than I have. The birth date that Tessa King is mentioning for Sidney is very close to that of my GF. Would it be possible if we shared info? We might be able to fill some of the gaps. Regards, Cliff Bennett.
