Hi All The answer is - don't lets leave it in their hands - digitise and make records available else where and in more than one place. In generations to come they will ask - "who has your grandfather's micro chip" as everything will be on there probably. Scary thought. Hi Sybil If you search for - How to find birth records - on Ancestry24 it gives one a good idea where and what you can find - Birth certificates were introduced officially in the late 1800′s and was not compulsory until 1905: Cape: 1895 Natal: 1868 Transvaal: 1901 Orange Free State: 1903 According to various sources Civil Registration dates are as follows: Province Births Marriages Deaths Cape 1895 1700 1895 Natal 1868 1845 1888 Transvaal 1901 1870 1901 OFS 1903 1848 1903 Probably the best option (unless he was born in Natal), would be to try and search for a records of your grandfathers Baptism. Hi Elspeth, I've only ever seen my copy, but I would imagine it would be the same in each. Wouldn't it be more expensive to remove the farms from the maps than to simply update the atlas on each occasion? I think Nikki said there were 2 copies availale from Bidorbuy...... I am not sure what the boundaries of Komgha district were - my farm is listed under a few below 'near Gonubie River' - for practical purposes is this vague info all I'll get anyway, and if so where does anyone know more or less where this would refer to? I then would like to find out about farms in the Indwe / Dordrecht area in the 1890s. My search of KAB showed farms being transferred from Wodehouse district and Elliot district around 1919. Hi Elspeth, I managed to get a copy of the 'Readers Digest Atlas of Southern Africa' ....the copy I have was published in 1984. I was very surprised (and amazed) to find that there are thousands and thousands of farm names printed on the maps. I have succeeded in finding where many of my various family farms were situated just by looking at the maps. One does need a good magnifying glass, patience and a hi-liter.....I was brought up not to deface books, but I have to confess to having marked the various farms in different colours to indicate to me which branch of the family the farm had belonged to....it's a pity there are limited hi-lite colours available. One list member managed to find a copy for about £5 in New Zealand. My copy came from South Africa (I managed to find a copy through 'The Bookfinder General' but of course these days it is so much easier to find books on the net) was considerably more expensive. The postage alone was prohibitive as it is a very large book....to save money I got it posted by land rather than by air! Hi Sybil Regarding your second question, I had the same experience with Home Affairs with them saying that the cannot do an ID number lookup for me either. But then even when I had the ID no and paid for a certificate, they never did anything. Hi Elspeth.. Which family Names are you looking at... Cheri -----Original Message----- From: south-africa-eastern-cape-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:south-africa-eastern-cape-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Elspeth Muirhead Sent: Wednesday, 24 October 2012 8:31 AM To: south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com Subject: [ZA-EC] Tracing farms Komgha & Dordrecht / Indwe districts Hi listers I'm in a hopeless tangle trying to find out more or less which parts of the Eastern Cape my family farmed in - it's suddenly got urgent as I want to do a trip to the Eastern Cape soon. I wonder if someone can explain how to trace the 1891 map of Komgha district (I have a list of the farm numbers and owners from on 2005 thread on this list but need to see whereabouts it is). Indwe was very new in 1890 - but where would farms around 1894- 1900 or so be registered? Where and how would I look for this information? Thank you. Elspeth
