    3. Dear Malcolm, Do you see a map of Africa? - Click anywhere on South Africa. This should take you to a page that looks almost like a directory-tree Click on the plus sign before South Africa to expand that branch. The either click on the sgSA250k (lesser detail maps) or Expand the sgSA50k (more detail maps) and then click on the province. You should now see a grid of SA / an area of SA. Click on the block you are interested in. You will see a thumbnail photo of the map and below it a download button. Click on download and select save to your PC. Hope it works. Regards Paul

    1. Re: [ZA-EC] JEWELL, JAMES, JOHNSON, CHERRY, HARRISON, DU PLESSIS, WARNER on Cape Civil Service List 1900
    2. Louisa Louw
    3. Hi Lynette My apologies for taking such a long time to reply. My JOHNSON connection: My grandfather Henry Stephen JAMES, born 22 May 1873, d.12 Oct 1950, PE Married 1st wife: Gertruida Wilhelmina Johanna JOHNSON. b abt.1838, d.2 Jan 1925, PE. Buried at South End, PE. On the gravestone (eggsa) it says she was 87 yrs old, which would mean she was 35 yrs older than him, so I don’t think there could be any children between the 2 of them. I am in search of the names of her parents and brothers and sisters, but up to now couldn’t trace anything about her birth or whereabouts when and before she got married to my grandfather. If I can find that, I’m sure I’ll be able to bring the connection with other JOHNSON links. I have a copy of the Master of the Supreme Court which shows their address at the time of her death as Fairview Estate, Walmer side, PE. According to my mother Fairview Estate was the house where she grew up and the street address was #18, 17th Avenue, Walmer, PE. Unfortunately the surname BEST sounds unfamiliar to me, BUT on the other hand, my mother knows nothing at all about the JOHNSON side of the family and won’t know if there maybe was a BEST married into the family. She was the youngest child and away in a boarding school during her school years and there wasn’t much opportunity to come to know more of the family. I’m going to put the info of the previous generations on the ZA-EC mailing list for the other people to see. Hopefully it will be before the end of the weekend, and hopefully it will lead to lots of new connections, for some other people and for me. I really want to have a “mini” Family Tree finished by Dec to give to my mother for Christmas. 3. Hi Nikki Taking the first names of the males of the JAMES family into consideration it seems I need to ask for more info of the following persons, please: JAMES: Joseph Thomas JOHNSON: Francis Robert Harry Smythe Francis Herbert William John CHERRY: George William HARRISON: George Alfred Hopefully there will be some leads to link the JAMES marriages to the other surnames. 3. Hi to the list, During the past week I visited a bookshop in Johannesburg and saw a small leather bound bible about the size of a paperback) for sale, with very feint entries on 5 pages listing the LIEBETRAU Family starting with Johann Lorentz LIEBETRAU b. 20 Dec 1772 married Helena Elizabeth KUSTER (KUSLER)? b. 30 Apr 1784 and other entries up to about 1848. There was also another leather bound bible (bigger than A4) and text in Welsh - I think, and there was a single page with about 5 entries and starting with John MORGANS b. 15 Jul 1823 married Catherien MORGANS. They kindly allowed me to photograph them, (not great photos unfortunately) but if anyone would like copies, just give me a shout. Best wishes Shirley

    3. Hi everyone Sorry to be such a pest at the moment - I'll offer some look-ups at CT Archives in exchange for advise for my trip. I don't know the area, and find conflicting reports on what the on town is like - how long to spend there. Accomodation is also really more than I can afford - geared to business visitors. Would it possibly be better to go for a farm stay in Stutterheim and then drive back into kwt on the days I want to be there? Thank you. elspeth

    3. Hi Ian I have no dates on Mary Ann Elizabeth MULLIGAN. I got a Facebook message from a descendant in July this year, but failed to see it until a week back - she has not responded yet. I will make a note and send you the dates when I get them - I think I can trace her through another Facebook relative. Mary Ann Elizabeth MULLIGAN was the daughter of Lawrence MULLIGAN (abt 1820/3-1888) and Rose Amelia SMITH (1824-1894) (married 1847 Fort Beaufort). They farmed on Hartebeesfontein, Winterberg, neighbouring Post Retief, owned by Rose Amelia's father, John Joseph SMITH (1779-1852 = 1820 settler) from 1847 through the 1850's. Lawrence MULLIGAN was the son of a John and Mary MULLIGAN, but I haven't been able to establish whether this was the John and Mary MULLIGAN, part of Turvey's party. In fact, it going on records, it looks not, despite name and dates. Records show 1820 settler Mary dying, and John remarrying a Sarah MENZIES and having three daughters. I wonder whether Mary died in child birth with a son - my Lawrence. I would love the CONNELLAN descendants off line Ian. Thank you. In certain instances it is almost like a DN but giving only the children's ages and no names. Why this is a gem is that it shows my gg grandparents August Hermann GEBHARDT and Christina NURENBERG in fact had 15 children and not 14 as I originally believed. The 15th child, a daughter, only survived for 10 days. The only timeslot I think she may fall into is sometime between 1879 and 1881, between the births of her sisters Sophie and Antonje or after 1881. Can any lister point me in the direction where I can try to locate a birth or death entry for the little one? Unfortunately I have no name for her. Regards to all, and thanks again Gail, Rod g * *

    3. Hi Elspeth, Glad I could be of help. If you have any additional information on Mary Ann Elizabeth MULLIGAN, and her husband, particularly dates, I would be most grateful if you would share. If you are interested, I can send you, off list, a file of the descendants of Bernard Reginald CONNELLAN, her son, and Dorothea O'Carroll MULLIN. If anyone else is interested, I am happy to share. 3. Hi Ian Thanks very much! It does - that is the marriage I've referred to but only had the surname. Another piece of the puzzle - how exciting! It is also very interesting to see where they farmed - my great grandfather was Mary Ann's MULLIGAN brother and I know he farmed in King William's Town/Komgha district in the early 1890s. This is added confirmation that family members seemed to have moved into that area from Post Retief where they were born. Drothea O'Carroll MULLIN (1898-1989), daughter of Patrick James MULLIN and Mary Ann PHILIPPS, married, in 1908, Bernard Reginald CONNELLAN (1890-1965), son of John Jim CONNELLAN and Mary Ann Elizabeth MULLIGAN. I have no other details for Mary Ann Elizabeth MULLIGAN besides her name. This CONNELLAN family lived and farmed in the King William's Town/Stutterheim district. Don't know if this will be of any help to you.
