I have taken my German Group twice on a tour to that area, but the info is too much for an e-mail on the list. I might be able to better your accommodation idea. I can assure you I am entirely helping you without getting any benefit from it at all. Regards. Trudie Marais trudie@freedomlinetech.co.za 041-3795429 0828689433

    3. Hi Lynn Thank you for this link ref. I had my doubts about the 87 years all the time and was hoping that it is 67 yrs. If there was only a 15 year age difference and not 35, it might be possible that they had children. I am still searching for a birth or baptismal record of her to be very sure. 3. Hi Jennifer Bell, I noticed you emailed on the list. I am also researching the Bell family. I am Christine (Bell)Weaver, Grandfather Henry Bell of PE, GG Edward Bell of Grahamstown, PE and Kimberley. My GGG is unknown, though apparently he was a dentist and he was in Kimberley at a point as we have a photo of him from Middlebrooks Studios in Kimberley. Anyway, the chances are extremely slim that we are from the same clan, but I will be happy to share any information I have! 3. HI Louise If its any help... if you look again at the photograph on eGGSA http://www.eggsa.org/library/main.php?g2_itemId=1315773 it shows her age as 67 (not 87) at death making her d.o.b. Abt. 1858 - 15 years difference between their ages?? Take care Lynn -----Original Message----- From: Louisa Louw Sent: Saturday, October 27, 2012 12:10 PM To: south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ZA-EC] JEWELL, JAMES, JOHNSON, CHERRY, HARRISON, DU PLESSIS, WARNER on Cape Civil Service List 1900 Hi Lynette My apologies for taking such a long time to reply. My JOHNSON connection: My grandfather Henry Stephen JAMES, born 22 May 1873, d.12 Oct 1950, PE Married 1st wife: Gertruida Wilhelmina Johanna JOHNSON. b abt.1838, d.2 Jan 1925, PE. Buried at South End, PE. On the gravestone (eggsa) it says she was 87 yrs old, which would mean she was 35 yrs older than him, so I don’t think there could be any children between the 2 of them. I am in search of the names of her parents and brothers and sisters, but up to now couldn’t trace anything about her birth or whereabouts when and before she got married to my grandfather. If I can find that, I’m sure I’ll be able to bring the connection with other JOHNSON links. I have a copy of the Master of the Supreme Court which shows their address at the time of her death as Fairview Estate, Walmer side, PE. According to my mother Fairview Estate was the house where she grew up and the street address was #18, 17th Avenue, Walmer, PE. Unfortunately the surname BEST sounds unfamiliar to me, BUT on the other hand, my mother knows nothing at all about the JOHNSON side of the family and won’t know if there maybe was a BEST married into the family. She was the youngest child and away in a boarding school during her school years and there wasn’t much opportunity to come to know more of the family. I’m going to put the info of the previous generations on the ZA-EC mailing list for the other people to see. Hopefully it will be before the end of the weekend, and hopefully it will lead to lots of new connections, for some other people and for me. I really want to have a “mini” Family Tree finished by Dec to give to my mother for Christmas.

    3. Hi Mike and Norma I don't know anything about John Alexander RALPH, but along the line I inherited some notes on the RALPH family tree from my sister-in-laws mother - she was a KNOTT and the KNOTT and RALPH lines are inter-linked. I am not researching the RALPH line at all, but seeing the correspondence below prompted me to pull out these notes. There were two RALPH families in FORD's 1820 Settler Party who went out to the Eastern Cape on the Weymouth in 1820: 1. Richard RALPH (b. abt 1790/91 in Crockerton, Wiltshire) married in abt 1815 to Elizabeth MILLS (b. 1790). Richard and Elizabeth had 4 children: Harriet (b. 1815/16), Samuel or Stephen (b. 1818 and di. shortly after their arrival in the Cape), Sarah and Agatha. So as the only son died young there are no male RALPH descendants from this line. 2. Joseph RALPH (b. 15 Jul 1792 in Crockerton, Wiltshire) a Baptist Lay Preacher married in 1815 at Crockerton, Wiltshire to Elizabeth CURTIS (b. ? Crockerton, Wiltshire and died sometime between Dec 1827 and Dec 1834 in the Eastern Cape) I suspect that Richard and Joseph RALPH were most likely brothers - both families came from Crockerton in Wiltshire, England. I haven't checked Sue McKay's 1820 Settler correspondence - there may be more clues in that on their relationship. Joseph RALPH and Elizabeth CURTIS had 5 children: Joseph (b. 1816, d. 1837), Mary (b. 1819, d. 21 Feb 1820 at sea), John (b. 1822), Rhoda (b. 1824), and Jemima (b. 1827). After Elizabeth died Joseph CURTIS married Carolina Margaretha PIETERSON (or PIETERSEN) in Dec 1834 in Somerset East. Joseph and Carolina had 11 children: i) Catherine RALPH (b. 13 Oct 1837 - Botha's Post, Cradock district) ii) Hannah Palmer RALPH (b. 05 May 1839 - Botha's Post Cradock district) ..... rest of her details in Mike's email below iii) Jacoba RALPH (b. 09 Nov 1840 - Kogelhouts Kop, Queenstown) iv) Samuel Richard RALPH (b. 25 May 1842 - Kogelhouts Kop, Queenstown) v) Benjamin RALPH (b. 15 Dec 1844 - - Kogelhouts Kop, Queenstown) vi) Peter RALPH (b. 26 Oct 1846 - Kogelhouts Kop, Queenstown) vii) James RALPH (b. 28 Oct 1848 - Kogelhouts Kop, Queenstown) viii) Caroline RALPH (b. 10 Mar 1851 - Kogelhouts Kop, Queenstown)) ix) Daniel RALPH (b. 23 Aug 1854 - Kogelhouts Kop, Queenstown)) x) William Walker RALPH (b. 17 Sep 1856 - Kogelhouts Kop, Queenstown) xi) Jesse RALPH (b. 28 Oct 1858 - Kogelhouts Kop, Queenstown) I have further details on Benjamin RALPH's descendants if anyone is interested. The source for the information on Joseph RALPH's family is a typed note by Harold James RALPH - Joseph's g.grandson and with handwritten annotations by Harold and presumably by Ann SMITH (nee KNOTT). There is a third RALPH 1820 Settler - John RALPH (b. abt 1799) in ERITH's Party - I don't anything more about this line. I hope this info is of use to someone. Best wishes Craig -----Original Message----- From: Norma Patrick Sent: Friday, October 26, 2012 2:21 PM To: MICHAELJ WATTRUS ; south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ZA-EC] Lookups - John Alexander RALPH The following was received from Viv Kymdell in response to my 2005 Rootsweb enquiry:.
