    3. Hi Rose, Sending you two jpg files of the farm in a seperate email. De Rust is just off the maps to the North.  Interestingly, on the 2nd jpg( which is a blow up from the first), shows that the stream was known as Marnewicksrivier, and that there are ruins and a grave. Have fun!   -- Paul Tanner-Tremaine Hampshire, England email : eighteentwenty@btinternet.com website : www.1820Settlers.com ________________________________ From: Rose McArthur <rose.mus@hotmail.co.uk> To: "south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com" <south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, 30 October 2012, 10:07 Subject: Re: [ZA-EC] Re Farm maps Hi Joy, I hope I'm not being too optimistic.  My husband's gggg grandfather (J.C. 3. This is from an environmental impact assessment done (contact me off list if you would like a copy - it has maps etc. :)) "An electronic search of the Surveyor-General's database has revealed that both Welgevonden 75 and Witboyskraal 73 were surveyed and granted in 1821. Welgevonden 75 (No 257/1821) is described as a loan farm granted to Johan Coenraad Marneweck in September 1821 while Witboyskraal 73 (250/1821) was granted to "Landdrost" Johannes Marnewerk (sp?) and Johannes Hartwich in September 1821. A survey of the internet shows there were two individuals with the name Johann Conrad Marnewerk/Marneweck (sp?). Both were of German immigrant stock and one arrived at the Cape in 1774 and served in the Governor's bodyguard before being sentenced to be banished in 1794 due to an unnamed offence. The latter is recorded as having a son, Johan Coenraad, who married in 1813, and it could be this Marneweck who is referred to in the land grants. The survey diagram for Welgevonden shows a "woonhuis and ordanantie" in the centre of the farm, "zaayland" and "kelder" along the Huis River. The Marnewicksrivier on the property is therefore presumably named after the first owner. The subdivision of the property took place in the 1880's. Solomonskraal 74 (1988/1888) and Donkerhoek 72 (1987/1878) were only surveyed in 1878 and the first owners are not named." shani@sgla.co.za ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rose McArthur" <rose.mus@hotmail.co.uk> To: <south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 30, 2012 12:07 Subject: Re: [ZA-EC] Re Farm maps > > Hi Joy, > I hope I'm not being too optimistic. 3. I have found 6 Petrus Jacobus Delport's in my tree and sadly for you have no spouses for any of them. How weird! The guy you are looking for could well be one of these 6 so if you are looking for his parents, perhaps you could share a little more information? regards Malcolm On 2012/10/25 09:55 PM, Moyra Joyce wrote: > Hi List > > I am looking for information on Petrus Jacobus DELPORT who married Danielina > SCHUTTE in Bedford/Adelaide in about 1864. 2. Alan & Ann
    3. Hi Moyra Your query really intrigued me because I have DELPORT & SCHUTTE lineage. Perhaps the names are transposed? Was Danielina her baptismal name? "By-name" are very common. There are no SCHUTTE/DELPORT (or DE LA PORTE/DELAPORTE) records at NAAIRS containing a DANIELINA/DANIELLINA/DANIELLA. In the Schutte Webpage http://www.schutte.kaleido.co.za/sch-1.htm there are no DANIELINA/DANIELLINA SCHUTTE's but there are 2 DANIELLA's. (Contact: Tian Schutte by (013) 7411240/ 7598042 of e-pos by ts@cri.co.za) There are a number of PJ & JP DELPORT's in the published GISA DELPORT Genealogy. (I have pasted a portion below). You will see that there is a JPD (f1) who married Aletta SCHUTTE in Cradock in 1836. His brother, Petrus Johannes Leopoldus (f3) had a son, JP, born in 1842 who may be the one you are looking for. I also checked gravestones & burial records but found nothing helpful. Alan Cole e1 Jacobus Petrus 14.5.1797, boer "Tarka", dist. Most of you know that I've been trying for years to assemble my WILSON family with the firm knowledge that amongst 14 children born to my great-grandparents, there must be at least a few living relatives floating around. A couple of years ago I finally came across one who lives in South Africa we have happily exchanged information and kept in touch. Yesterday, which would have been my late father's 87th birthday, I sat down at my computer and the first e-mail was from Harry Anthony WILSON from New Zealand and by this morning we have confirmed that we have another link! He is particularly moved and excited as he knows of no other living connections and himself has no siblings. I am so looking forward to puzzling out a great deal more information between the two of us. 3. Hi Marielle, Please let me know if you find a Stephen Henry Kenneth WILSON (born c.1835/6, Lieut. 85th Regiment) who married Anne Emma Matilda MACLEAN, (born 27 May 1840). Anne was the daughter of Colonel Sir John MACLEAN (Lt. Governor of British Kaffaria and Natal) and Katherine Louisa Georgiana O'REILLY of Cove Rock, East London. Stephen WILSON married Anne MACLEAN on 6 July 1861 at Holy Trinity, King Williamstown. I am very keen to add their descendants to my O'REILLY family tree. The fact that your contact in New Zealand is named HARRY ANTHONY WILSON immediately caught my attention as both first names are O'REILLY names - especially 'Anthony' , which has come down the generations from my O'REILLY progenitor, Lt. Col. Anthony Alexander O'REILLY. A.A. was born at 'Baltrasna', Old Castle, County Meath around 1776, was the Brigade Major at Grahamstown from 1819 to 1848 and lived with his wife, Anne, born GRAVES (1780 - 1860) of Maryborough/Portlaoise, Ireland) next to Dr. ATHERSTONE in Beaufort Street, Grahamstown before dying at Cove Rockl, East London on 27 May 1870. I have loads of info going back centuries on the O'REILLY's but none on Stephen and Anne WILSON's descendants. Wouldn't it be great if we could help each other! 3. I always get a kick out of reading "happy ending" (or sometimes, beginning, depending on which way you look at it) stories! There have been so many times when I have been contacted by people responding to something I posted up to 10 years ago while trying to help somebody else, so the moral of this story is never give up and try to keep a constant e-mail address for your research! Regards Marielle

    3. I have no idea if my family is related but my cousin is Leigh Bennett, son of Katrina Fourie and Stephen Bennett (I don't know what Stephen's fathers name is) I know my cousin's grandfather lives in Pinetown and I know that Stephen was adopted by them. Stephen lives in the Durban area now I think. I also know that the grandfather is from the United Kingdom as they all have British Passports. If you come across their names in your searches please let me know so I can pass it on to my cousin, if you want I can ask him a bit more about his grandfather?
