Hi Pat, I have just been on to the Ancestry 24 Website: I can confirm that James Ronald GORDON was a sailor. He married Catherine LAMONT 2 Dec 1865.(port Elizabeth Marriages Methodist) You mentioned LAMONT: If the Alexander LAMONT buried there was born in 1 Feb 1809 and died 30 November 1864....(born Sutherlandshire Scotland)he would probably be old enough to be her father...was her sister Isabella LAMONT? I did find this...maybe the same man came out to South Africa after 1851 as he is on the 1851 census: (see LDS website) name: Alexr Lamont event type: Census event date: 1851 gender: Male age: 42 birthplace: Sutherlandshire registration district: county: Sutherland estimated birth year: 1809 film number: 1042005 Cheri -----Original Message----- From: south-africa-eastern-cape-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:south-africa-eastern-cape-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Pat Smith Sent: Tuesday, 6 November 2012 7:39 PM To: south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ZA-EC] St. George's Park Cemetery, Port Elizabeth Hello Cheri, Many thanks. Hi Alan You are right about the slowness and frustration of searching on the LDS site, however, I have had some successes so keep plodding away. I keep a detailed record of the year and the area I am looking in and if after 15 - 20 minutes (depending on my time), it becomes clear that it is very slow and blocking some images, I make a note of where I am and log off to try again another time. Sometimes as little as a few minutes later, the same "black" image opens up with no difficulty whatsoever (?) Antoinette

Hi Listers On the LDS FamilySearch website we have access to Cape Civil Death records up until 1954, although the title says there are records up until 1972. I was wondering where we can get access to subsequent records in particular 1965? Adding on to this question, if access is possible does anyone know how this can be done remotely given I am in the Netherlands? regards Malcolm

Hi Alan, I followed the link last night, but for Kimberley and for various years. Ultimately I was quite lucky, but every so often the screen would go blank, and I'd have to back to square 1. When I knew the year and the month - e.g. August, and there were, say, 1500 images, I typed in 900 in the image number. That brought me to approximately August, but I had to keep an eye on the page number of the image so that when the screen stopped responding, then I knew what image (page) to restart with. Once the page stopped responding, I clicked on the original link and went through the process again, and was able to pick up where I left off. Hope this makes sense!! Best wishes, Rose > From: onganda@iway.na > To: SOUTH-AFRICA-EASTERN-CAPE@rootsweb.com > Date: Tue, 6 Nov 2012 13:24:37 +0200 > Subject: [ZA-EC] Death Notices in PE (LDS site) > > Hi Antoinette, Gwyn and others > >e
Hi Antoinette, Gwyn and others It sounds grand, logging on the the LDS website (familysearch.org), and hunting down death notices in various towns for various years, but either you have super-fast internet connections, or Namibia Telecom is particularly slow today! Clearly, one has to already know the date and place of death to start using this material (browsing of individual images only - no search possibilities). For example, my grandfather (William Gray) died on 22 March 1950 in PE, but if I only had the year and not exact date, at about 2 - 10 minutes per image to download, it would take me years to 'view' all 4761 images for PE in 1950! Even when you know the exact date, it is still a hit-or-miss affair to find the image among those thousands (and opening 1950, I found that images 1 and 2 are actually for deaths in March and September 1949! - So be aware that the death notice you are looking for might not even be under the year you expect to find it!) In fact, it seems that some images just never download at all - I have been waiting half an hour for an image to come up, but all I get is a black screen with the white tools (Rotate, zoom, Save, Print etc) on the left side. Does anyone else have this problem, or is it just Namibia Telecom? It cannot be my computer software, as a few images have actually eventually materialised. Thanks Alan
Hi Alan I am in Amsterdam with a super dooper internet connection. LDS website has seemed slower than normal to pull up images; having said that I get an image in around 10 seconds whilst usually it is about 5 seconds Rgds Malcolm -----Original Message----- From: MR ALAN DOUGLAS HATTLE <onganda@iway.na> Sender: south-africa-eastern-cape-bounces@rootsweb.com Date: Tue, 06 Nov 2012 13:24:37 To: <SOUTH-AFRICA-EASTERN-CAPE@rootsweb.com> Reply-To: south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com Subject: [ZA-EC] Death Notices in PE (LDS site) Hi Antoinette, Gwyn and others It sounds grand, logging on the the LDS website (familysearch.org), and hunting down death notices in various towns for various years, but either you have super-fast internet connections, or Namibia Telecom is particularly slow today! Hi I contacted fsarch@sacr.fs.gov.za with the reference numbers I was looking for copies of and they sent me a quote. After I deposited the money and sent them the proof of payment, I received the copies very promptly. I may add the costs were minimal and included the postage. The contact person was Donald van Wyk (Principal Archivist).
