    1. Re: [ZA-EC] Dennis Alfred Platt
    2. Dear Rod I am very interested in Dennis Alfred PLATT. He married my 1st cousin twice removed Pamela Helen LEARY. She was the daughter of Dr. Samuel LEARY and Alice Eulalie WALLACE. Alice is a WALLACE and ORPEN descendant. I'd be very interested in further details re the couple, and whether or not they had any children (off-List of course). Pamela did remarry, if that is of any interest to you. 3. Hi Ian, I have been working away at Dennis Alfred Platt I have figured out a whole lot more about the Platt family and have about 270 individuals in my database. I have spent hours on it and am reasonably sure its a good reconstruction. If anyone needs info please let me know. I am stuck on Edward Ashworth Platt born in 1844 and married to Petrena Vosper Henry. They had 9 children. Do you or anyone please have any info on either Edward Ashworth Platt or the children? 3. Thank you Nikki! It just shows how one can incorrectly jump to conclusions. I have a 'raft' of CRON CRONWRIGHTS, WEAKLY'S, FEATHERSTONES etc. who have been co-opted into the family due to marriages.....I tend to go a bit overboard when adding rellies....I get caught up in the 'chase'! I worked on the tree from 3am (I woke and didn't feel like sleeping again) until I left to go and do the weekly grocery shop just before 2....It's really not good to sit for such a long period.....I did get up from time to time....but as I was enjoying the search I was reluctant to stop! Today it was families a member of the TAINTON family married into....she married an American so as you can imagine with the different Nationalities the names became very interesting. 1. Re: [ZA-EC] CRON, WRIGHT, CRONWRIGHT, OLIVE SCHREINER.
    2. Fay Lea
    3. Hi there, Here is an interesting article on Olive Schrieiner's house in Cradock, for those who are interested. John Distin (mentioned in the article) was my 2xgreat grandfather. Kind regards Fay SCHREINER HOUSE CRADOCK THE NATIONAL ENGLISH LITERARY MUSEUM Olive Schreiner and Cradock Olive Schreiner came to Cradock in 1867 when she was 12, in the wake of the collapse of her parental home after her father’s insolvency. Her brother Theo (23 in 1867), who had become headmaster of the local public school after teaching for four years in Grahamstown, was head of the little household, with their sister Ettie (17) as housekeeper. In the following year their younger brother Will, the 11, joined them. The four remained together until 1870, when Theo and Will went to seek their fortune at the diamond fields. Ettie stayed in Cradock to run a small school; Olive, at the age of 15, left to become a governess with the Orpen family in Barkly East. Olive appears to have started writing two stories while she lived in Cradock (called “Rain” and “Diamonds”), but not surprisingly no record from this period exists to bear witness to her emergent creative genius. Nevertheless it was in Cradock that her religious and philosophical convictions were given form, and in Cradock where she made friendships which were to play a role in directing her activities for the next eleven years. She returned to the district in 1875 as governess to the Fouchēs at Klein Ganna Hoek, having begun, three years earlier, a novel (Undine) and several stories and allegories. Her writing continued as she moved from one post of governess to the other (the Martins at Ratel Hoek in 1876, the Cawoods at Ganna Hoek in 1879, and back in August that year to the Fouchēs, now at Lelie Kloof). By 1880 she had finished the first version of the Story of an African Farm; in 1881 she sailed to Britain. Olive came back to the Cape, a famous woman, in 1890. Her ties with the Cradock area were strengthened in 1892 when, on a visit to the Cawoods, she met Samuel Cron Cronwritght, then farming on Krantzplaas; they were married in February, 1894. Her attachment to the district is evidenced by her desire to be buried on Buffelskop, south of Cradock, where in 1921 she was re-interred. Schreiner House in Cradock is thus a fittingly symbolic centre for her commemoration as a writer and woman of great insight and influence. Schreiner House (9 Cross Street) While Schreiner House is one of the oldest dwellings still standing in Cradock, there is no evidence of its exact age or original appearance. An 1853 map of Cradock shows a building on the site. The first purchaser of the erf was John Pressly, who paid £30 for it in 1847; he sold it in 1854 to John Distin for £95. The inference is that Pressley erected the building between 1847 and 1852. Judging by the 400mm- thick mud-brick walls and the heavy yellowwood ceiling beams in the core of the house, what he put up was in all likelihood a three-roomed cottage – a bedroom (1) living –room (2) in line, with a kitchen (3) in a wing. It could either have been flat-roofed or have had a double pitched roof over the bedroom and living-room; both forms existed in Cradock at the time, as Thomas Baines’ painting of the town in 1848 shows. The property was sold for £112 in 1856 to William Destin, (Distin) who in turn sold it in June 1857 to Carl Kaaland for £120. Fourteen months later, Kaaland sold it to Peter Sidey for £200. This relatively large increase in value suggests that it was kaaland who addes the dining-room (4) and stoepkamer (5) and constructed the passage.(6). That these were additions and not part of the original building is evident from the ceiling beams, the foundations and the thickness of the walls. At this point the whole house was placed under a flat, corrugated-iron-roof. This was probably the form of the building, approximating ot a standard Cradock form of the second half of the 19th century, when Theo Schreiner hire it from Jemima Sidey, who had inherited it in 1866. At later stages a bathroom, pantry and kitchen extension were added along the western side, and in about 1930 the stoep was given a verandah of corrugated iron. Early photographs of Cradock provided a degree of certainty in reconstructing the exterior, while comtemporaneous cultural patterns as shown in other buildings were helpful in determining the uses to which the rooms were put. Thus the room to the left of the front door had become the parlour, that to the right a bedroom and the back room a dining/living room. The kitchen’s function was unchanged and the stoepkamer must have served as another bedroom it was decided to restore the house to this form, typical of the 160’s and that which the Schreiners in all likelihood were familiar with. The post-Shreiner additions on the western side have been retained (with the exception of the kitchen extension) to provide accommodation for the service facilities need in a museum. While Schreiner House is one of the oldest dwellings still standing in Cradock, there is no evidence of its exact age or original appearance. An 1853 map of Cradock shows a building on the site. The first purchaser of the erf was John Pressly, who paid £30 for it in 1847; he sold it in 1854 to John Distin for £95. The inference is that Pressley erected the building between 1847 and 1852. 3. Just in case your information doesn't include the following I couldn't resist typing it up as he sounds to me like a man who deserves as much attention as we can give him! Rev. George THOMPSON ' on the 27th June 1874, there died in Grahamstown the Rev. George THOMPSON aged 73 held by all to be a man of great holiness ......... His funeral which we all attended was said to have been the largest ever held in Grahamstown..........It was said that he had been found dead on his knees at his bedside, and that all the money he had in the world was half a crown. No wonder he was poor and ill-nourished, for he gave everything away ; even when ill, if a devoted sympathiser sent him some little delicacy, a tender piece of chicken, some good soup or jelly, or a light pudding, he would at once get up and run off with it, and, with great joy, give it to some poor, sick, needy person ( child or adult), entirely oblivious of his own sore necessity." Oh that there were more like him in this world!! 3. Yes Tombi You are correct The author of the book is the Husband of Olive Schreiner Kind regards Nikki -----Original Message----- From: Tombi Peck Sent: Thursday, November 22, 2012 10:39 AM To: south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ZA-EC] CRON, WRIGHT, CRONWRIGHT,WEAKLY from Her South African Ancestors 1930 Samuel Cron Cronwright. Hi Nikki, If I'm right the 'Her' referred to in the book is Olive Emilie Albertina SCHREINER, his wife, authoress of 'Story of an African Farm'. Her house at 9 Cross Street, Cradock is, I believe now a museum (it was at one time anyway). If I remember correctly she was buried high on a hillside with both her dog and her baby......that may be sadly awry....I have so much buzzing through my poor noddle. Just been filling in the husband and children of a 2nd cousin twice removed, Zilla Clifton TAINTON. She married an American of German descent called Ernest Emil POTTBERG....they lived in Statten Island, New York....makes me smile! 3. Hi Moyra here you go! Hope this all helps to add some colour to the family story! Kind regards Nikki HURNDALL came to South Africa to "take up a billet under B.M. SHEPPERSON, an Englishman who had married our Aunt Fan ( nee FEATHERSTONE) and was a member of parliament for Grahamstown." " 'Old Aunt HURNDALL' as mothers family called our Great Aunt Elizabeth, died at Kimberley in about 1874. She lived for a long time with the SHEPPERSONs, part of that time at Bathurst; she was with them there in 1870, possible earlier. When quite a small boy, Mother took me to the SHEPPERSONs at Bathurst. I was too young to remember much, but two small incidents while on that visit remain with me and may be of some interest. I doubt whether i should remember the visit but for them. One morning early, as I was running up the passage of the house, Uncle SHEPPERSON put his head into the passage out of the doorway of his bedroom and called for something. I knew him as a man with a head of glossy, flaxen, dark-chestnut hair, always well brushed, in perfect order, lying close to his head and curling up as a little fringe at the back of his neck and above the ears. But the head that suddenly confronted me, and that i recognised from the voice must be his, was no such head; it was as bald as an ostrich egg. In terror I turned round on the instant and ran as fast as i could from the dreadful apparition, and out at the other end of the passage. In this way I learnt what a wig was." " Elizabeth Ann ( FEATHERSTONE)married in 1857 an Englishman, B.M. SHEPPERSON, who is mentioned early in this narrative. She was a tall hansome and stately woman, and her son Bertie stood 6ft 5 in. in his socks. Father used to say that Aunt Fan was a cery capable business woman. She accompanied her husband to England not very long after their marriage. Apropos of this visit she told me two amusing incidents. As they passed through Cape Town they engaged a coloured nurse for the little children. In England, when Uncle took her and the children, accompanied by the coloured nurse, to meet his people, it was the nurse they welcomed and kissed, under the impression that, coming from the Cape, his wife would be coloured, and that a white nurse had been engaged. On another occasion, when shopping in London, she asked for a pair of gloves. When it transpired that she came from South Africa, the salesman was astonished and looked at her as though he could not believe his eyes; then apologising, he explained that he thought all the people "out there" were black and wore blankets." -----Original Message----- From: moyraj@r63.co.za Sent: Wednesday, November 21, 2012 8:30 PM To: south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ZA-EC] Her South African Ancestors FEATHERSTONE, FINAUGHTY,CRON, WRIGHT, CRONWRIGHT Hi Nikki, could you let me have any info on SHEPPERSON please. 3.
