We are prepared to say that there are too few of such “Mothers in Israel” as Mrs Lloyd. Her sterling Christian character, her kindly helpful personality, and her kindly cheerfulness, was such as made a few moments in her presence memorable. We also know what a mother she was in her home, creating by her presence an atmosphere that could only make a home lovely and make right living easy. Our sincerest sympathy goes out to the bereaved members of the family." > (My note: She is said to have been the daughter of Robert & Martha Godfrey but if one calculates her age at death being 73 this would make her date of birth 1852 which is too old for her mother being born in Abt. 1791 - aged 28 in the Settlers Handbook by Nash) > Take care > Lynn > -----Original Message----- From: Cheri Marshall > Sent: Saturday, November 24, 2012 2:58 PM > To: south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [ZA-EC] FINAUGHTY and related families. Hi Cheri A query re your Maria GODFREY as I have her being born about 1852. I have Henry Thomas GODFREY x Jane ULYATE with their first born being Maria b 21 Apr 1837. Did she die young as the Mrs HT LLOYD has this obit Maria died on 23 July 1925 “We express very general regret when we record the passing away of Mrs H. T. Lloyd, one of the oldest and most respected residents of Queenstown, on Sunday morning last, at the age of 73 years. Our sincerest sympathy goes out to the bereaved members of the family." (My note: She is said to have been the daughter of Robert & Martha Godfrey but if one calculates her age at death being 73 this would make her date of birth 1852 which is too old for her mother being born in Abt. 1791 - aged 28 in the Settlers Handbook by Nash) Take care Lynn -----Original Message----- From: Cheri Marshall Sent: Saturday, November 24, 2012 2:58 PM To: south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ZA-EC] FINAUGHTY and related families. Hi Yvette It is the author Samuel Cron Cronwright that is referring to John Henry FINAUGHTY as being his grandmother's brother. The debate was about the dates of death of Ann and Jane. Kind regards Nikki -----Original Message----- From: Yvette Sent: Saturday, November 24, 2012 10:25 AM To: south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ZA-EC] FINAUGHTY and related families. Info fromHerSouthAfricanAncestors - Cronwright HI Nikki and Lynn Thanks both for the extra bits on Ann Cowie and all her children (quite fun being distantly related to so many family names that I recognise from our Grahamstown days!). But I Am really puzzled about the last bit from you Nikki? Where do you think the punctuation is wrong? I can’t make it make sense!? ”Ann FINAUGHTY, born COWIE, is buried in the same enclosure as Henry ULYATE. Her parents ( her mother born WARBURTON) came out among the 1820 British Settlers. She married John Henry FINAUGHTY, grandmother’s brother, the emigrant boy of seven in 1820, our great uncle. Their daughter, Jane FINAUGHTY, married her cousin, William FEATHERSTONE, our uncle ( Bertha’s father), and died at Grahamstown on the 2nd September, 1871 aged 54 years.” What does that actually mean? John Finaughty her husband can’t have been Ann’s grandmother’s brother surely!!? Or am I being dom!? Thank you so much for this work you do. No 760 would have been my uncle and we didn't know of this baby's short existence. Gives poignant colour to those far off times. Happily, Mary (nee Holland) and Sidney did have two healthy sons thereafter. Your instructions as to how to use the archive are so clear that I found the death certificate straight away. Thank you again.
