Hi Carol, >From Ellen's Stantons Transcripts on our list 2002 PE births: Methodist Parish Records: Port Elizabeth #10 The father Joseph: Entry #644 Child: Joseph MEW Parents: William James and Luis? Blanche Born: 7/21/1881 Baptized: 8/14/1881 Very odd that a John Maxwell MEW was mentioned as aged 16 in 1950 here in Australia(on thursday 2nd) as being killed by fumes...he would have been born circa 1934: , Thurs: Sixteen-year-old John Maxwell Mew, of Homebush, collapsed and died last night soon after inhaling benzol fumes. When he returned home from work with green paint on his arms, hands and face, he asked his mother for kerosene to remove it, but she had none. He then went to a shed where he found a bottle of benzol, and rubbed it on the paint marks. A few seconds later he cried out that he had petrol in his eyes, and then collapsed. His father rushed him to a doctor. He was taken to hospital, but died soon after. See http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/80830512?searchTerm=%20maxwell%20mew&searchLimits= maybe they moved? I do too Douglas, but not the same family as Becky . My man in the commissariat landed in Cape Town in 1815 with quite a large family. He was in the commissariat on Madeira during the Peninsular campaign and came out on the Havannah in the same fleet of ships which escorted Napoleon to St Helena. I have done quite a bit of work on this family though there is masses in Peter Philip's book "British Residents at the Cape "Happy hunting Pat(ricia) Frykberg -------------------------------------------------- From: "Douglas" <sirdc@telkomsa.net> Sent: Monday, December 03, 2012 7:25 PM To: <south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com> Subject: [ZA-EC] Horne > I have a question about Horne (I have a family member married to a British > Army person) also I came across a grave stone/plaque in Mossel Bay. Matson Terry was an 1820 settler arriving in PE at the age of 19. He appears to have died in 1828 and is buried in St Mary's in PE. And that's where the trail ends. I am looking for a link to a Charles Edward Terry who married Frances Ellen Dewes in St Paul's Church, Port Elizabeth in 1875. Also for his children as they are not entered on his DN (bad informant). They must have been baptized in this Church. Any help would be great! Greetings Brian. Thanks for the info. I believe she belongs to the second Flood family that arrived here. I have no info except there was a Bessie May Flood who I think is connected to your Elizabeth Flood. Bessie does have a TAB document. Regards. Douglas. -----Original Message----- From: Brian Benningfield Sent: Monday, December 03, 2012 10:18 AM To: 'Douglas' ; south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [ZA-EC] E-mails. Hi there Please can someone tell me if you can get Birth Certificates for people that were born in the 1860's. My great grandmother was born in 1869 in Port Elizabeth. I know nowadays one needs an ID number but those days did they even have such a thing. Thanks Patty
To the best of my knowledge birth certificates weren't introduced in the various Republics & colonies until well after this date. When writing to Buckingham Palace some years ago my father had to use my great-aunt's baptismal certificate to show proof of her age as she was born prior to birth Certificates being issued in the Transvaal Republic.
