Hi All Apologies for the cross-posting. In the first record below, the parents are Walter Stanley CARTER (1890-1950) and Kathleen Norah HERRINGTON (1891-1966). They had four daughters (Margaret, Judy, Patricia and Elizabeth) , but I have no dates for any of them. Does anyone have any idea which one is referred to in the birth record below? On the JOUGHIN record - does anyone know who this is and how they fit into the JOUGHIN Family. Both the CARTER and JOUGHIN families mentioned here are linked to the 1820 Settler THORNHILL line. Best wishes Craig -----Original Message----- From: Tara Norton Sent: Thursday, December 06, 2012 1:59 PM To: KWAZULU-NATAL-SOUTH-AFRICA@rootsweb.com ; south-africa-cape-town@rootsweb.com ; 'south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com'(south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com) ; OFS List(SOUTH-AFRICA-ORANGE-FREE-STATE@rootsweb.com) Subject: [ZA-EC] DOMESTIC NOTICES, THE NATAL WITNESS, DEC 6 - 7, 1918 FRIDAY, 6 DECEMBER, 1918 BIRTHS CARTER. - At Boscobello, on the 29th November, to Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Dear Eleanor, I experienced the same frustrations, and I was informed by one of our listers several years ago, that all registers and records housed in the Rose Lane Congregational Church in Uitenhage were destroyed in a fire in the late nineteenth century. Peter

Hello Listers, What does one do when you hit a brick wall? You either get a ladder to climb over it or you try and hammer it down! I have tried to climb over it however the brick wall seems higher than most and it is missing church records that seems to be the barrier. I have not been able to trace the Congregational Church Records for Port Elizabeth or Uitenhage and these hold I believe the key to the door (instead of having to climb over the wall or knock it down it would be easier to go through a door!) - quite simply it is tragic that these records are not available for people to get the relevant information from. I notice that early records for some denominations seems very scant and I wondered whether the ministers just did not bother to keep records or whether they are perhaps lying on some dusty shelf somewhere? I am looking for the Dutch Reform Church records for the period around 1820-1850 for the Uitenhage area as well - they are not on the LDS site. Where would we be if it were not for the LDS diligently collecting this data and with the assistance of those who so painstakingly transcribe them? Is there any kind lister out there who could take pity on me and share if they do have the records?? Looking forward to some positive interactions - I thank you in anticipation thereof! Kind regards Eleanor

Dear Adam, Here is a small contribution : - Hermann Rudolph ANDRE, a labourer was recruited to the German Settlers immigration scheme to the Eastern Cape in 1858. The 1858 group followed on the heels of the German Military Settlers who had been placed on the eastern frontier of the Cape Colony in 1857. Hermann was born in about 1815 in Wisbu in Prussia, and with his wife Friederike and three small children Carl, Laura and Ferdinand Hermann, he set sail from Hamburg on the 100-ton sailing vessel La Rochelle on 31 May 1858. The Andre family was destined for settlement at Potsdam on the frontier. However, Hermann died on the high sea during the voyage, and never reached his destination. Friederike married secondly Johann Jodicus Justus Louis BUSCHMANN. He was born on 17 October 1827 at Rinhausen in the district of Gottingen in Hanover, Germany. Louis was the tollkeeper at Vley Toll near King William=s Town, and he died in the Atin house@ near the Toll House on 7 December 1885. His death notice recorded the leaving of two children of full age which his wife had from a previous marriage. They were Carl, a carpenter, and Laura, the wife of Carl Springer. The youngest child, Ferdinand Hermann, had previously died at the age of 17. The eldest son Carl ANDRE (born Germany 6 October 1845, died King William=s Town 12 November 1891), married Helene BODE (born Holle, Germany, 23 April 1848, died King William=s Town 4 August 1924). Carl was a carpenter-builder, and became Mayor of King William=s Town from 1890 - 1891, the year of his death. Some of this stuff can be found in the book "For Men Must Work" by E.L.G.Schnell, and I believe there is more ANDRE family history tucked away in the Amatola Museum in King William's Town.
