    1. [ZA-EC] Researching Vice, Cook, O'Reilly and Hamilton in PE 1870-1890
    2. moonshell
    3. Hi, I am an Eggsa member overseas and am researching my family who lived in Port Elizabeth between 1873 and 1890 (approximately). The names of people I am interested in are: 1. Richard Hamilton b1826 - was Jetty Master in the latter 1870s. He is in the 1877 Directory living at *Pleasant Hill*. He had 3 children who died while they lived in PE - Anne Elizabeth b187_ and died in PE in early childhood, similarly William Hamilton b187_ and died in the 1870s. Possibly Isobel Hamilton (b1861 d. PE 1890s) I was wondering where they might be buried. 2. Jessie Cook who married an A O'Reilly in PE and had a daughter Louise O'Reilly in PE in 1879. Her husband died. 3. Jessie O'Reilly was living in Perkins Street when she remarried Mr Thomas Fairbridge Vice, a jobber from the UK around 1883. They had a daughter Catherine Jessie Vice b. 1884. Mr T.F Vice died in 1889. I was wondering if any of the PE Directories have information about Jessie Cook or the Vice family or if you could point me to resources to explore further. I have looked in the Eggsa gravestone directories, the online directories of PE and the Voters list of 1879. I have searched NAAIS and obtained estate files when available. Regards and thanks in advance for any suggestions. Shannon USA

    3. Good morning My advice would be to summarise what you know about the grandparents (birth date, church denomination, place of birth, date of death or any other details) and post it to the site. Also look on eGGSA for photographs of graves which could lead to clues. You could look up the references on NAAIRS as suggested by Malcolm and e-mail the relevant archives as they could post copies of the documents to you (at a small fee). Alternatively, having all your reference numbers ready when you visit the Cape next year would make your visit to the archives easier. Old East London records would fall under the Cape Archives as East London was part of the Cape Colony and Cape Province prior to democracy. Also, don't discount googling the relevant names as I have been very surprised to find hits when searching for my ancestors as there are so many records on the rootsweb message archives and other genealogy websites that you could get lucky. Hi Willem There is an as yet incomplete index of various national records available on the National Archives of South Africa at http://www.national.archives.gov.za/index.htm - Should you find something in an index it is sometimes possible to get a copy of the record through other avenues. 3. Hi Pat, Yes, Urlyn and Lassie are included in the family. I hope you have a very happy Christmas. This year I have agreed to go and spend Christmas with my younger daughter....she's moved and wants me to see her new house, car etc. It should be very pleasant. 1. Re: [ZA-EC] Thelia Lewis and LEWIS family?
    2. Tombi Peck
    3. I don't think so Cheri. Thelia Mary LEWIS is my great grandmother's daughter from her second marriage to John Elias LEWIS after her first husband Richard 'Allen' Knowlden TAINTON died, She was my grandmother's half sister. She had a brother Reece Lewis who was married to a Roman Catholic Zoe Unknown and they had two children, Dawn who was about 9 months older than me and a son Patrick or Paddy LEWIS. Reece worked on one of the Anglo American mines in Welkom so Dawn and I went to school together at St. Agnes Convent, Welkom, for a couple of years. I think she went on to school at Eunice in Bloemfontein where I went to St. John's DSG in Scottsville, Pietermaritzburg for a couple of years before going on to Barnato Park (Johannesburg Girls' High School in September 1955 until I wrote matric there in December 1958. John Elias LEWIS was my great grandfather's sergeant in the Cape Mounted Police when my great grandfather died on the 20th November 1905 in Cathcart. Her youngest son Allen Knowlden Hart TAINTON was born on the 27th December 1905. She had very little option other than to marry again quickly as she had 5 children to support. At the time of her first husband's death her children were: Lesley was 16, Clo was 15 (they were training as pupil teachers), Reg was 13 and Ches 4 and Allen was an infant. Unfortunately I don't know the dates of birth of Telia Mary or Reece Williams LEWIS. John Elias LEWIS left the Cape Mounted Police (I don't know when) and became a miner in the Transvaal. I don't know where he worked when his children were small but when I was a teenager he was working on Marievale Mine near Nigel. Before that he may have worked on one of the mines in Springs as I can remember visiting her at a block of flats somewhere in Springs when I was at Pinegrove School in Springs which was before 1948 when we moved to St. Helena Gold Mine in Welkom. I am Willem Nabuurs, from the Netherlands, have been researching my own family tree and ancestry for about 25 years now, and would like to extend my research to my wife's ancestry. My wife was born in the Eastern Cape, in East London; her grandparents' surnames are Jegels, Du Preez, Rondganger & Boesak. Questions that I have: - does anybody on this list know if these families have already been researched? If so, is it possible to get contact info for the researchers, or references to the research results? - is it possible to do any research via digital sources from the Netherlands, or is physical presence in South Africa itself the only way to find out more about my wife's ancestry? - if physical presence is required, then where do I start? I'll be in South Africa early next year (in Cape Town and East London) and might have some free time? Can anybody on this mailing list point me in the right direction? 1. [ZA-EC] The children of Richard 'Allen' Knowlden TAINTON and Amy Mary Rachel LLOYD.
    2. Tombi Peck
    3. Hi, At last I have been able to fill in a lot of gaps with the help of Ellen Stanton & Malcolm Stevens transcribing the lists of the Death Certificates in recent weeks. What would we do without the hard work of our fellow listers. I'm not going to try to list you all.....you know who you are and how much we appreciate your wonderful work. I don't have the exact birth & death date for the eldest daughter, but I will hope to eventually find this too. I have a photograph of Aunt Lesley and my Grandmother, Clo as young girls in tennis outfits while pupil teachers. If anyone would like a copy please let me know. The information I now have on this family unit is as follows: Richard 'Allen' Knowlden TAINTON born 14 December 1861 Graham's Town, Albany, Eastern Cape of Good Hope died 20 November 1905 Ward 1, Cathcart, Albany, Eastern Cape of Good Hope married about 1885 St. Peter's Church, Cradock Amy Mary Rachel LLOYD born 22 March 1867 Graham's Town, Albany, Eastern Cape of Good Hope died 1 July 1964 at the home of her daughter Thelia McCullough 116 Married Quarters, Marievale, near Nigel, Transvaal, Republic of South Africa. He was an underground miner. Unmarried. No Issue. He lived at 96a Kitzinger (Kilgour) Avenue, Brakpan, Transvaal, Union of South Africa (his mother's house). I'm delighted finally to have all the children listed correctly. I had though Averell was Avril and a girl! I thought Thelia's name was Thelma. I prefer Thelia. Aunt Dolly (Thelia Mary LEWIS from her second marriage to John Elias LEWIS) was obviously named after her infant sister. Best wishes, Tombi Peck
