I wonder if this Miss Wayland was Ellen Wayland born 1854 died 28.07.1926 married Alfred Gilfillan b 1846. Ellen is the sister of Emma who married Edward Boyer Cook Their daughter Mathilda 'May' Hart Cook married Edward Thornhill Gilfillan. Is Miss Loremore perhaps Miss LOVEMORE? I am also intrigued because one of my Cooke relatives lived around the corner from Cooke Lane on the North End hill. Were the Cookes from Cooke lane? Please let me know if you have success :) Shannon On Mon, Dec 17, 2012 at 8:17 AM, Malcolm Stevens <malcolm.stevens@upcmail.nl > wrote: > Sadly the email I sent bounced back - clearly the email address they > have on their website is old. That will be great as I have tried in the past to find out where records are kept and who streets are named after...I am interested in Hunt Street Central Port Elizabeth. Hi Malcolm, Some years back we came across a street in Krugersdorp with the same name as my wife's family (BARRATT). I sent an e-mail to the Krugersdorp municipality and I received a reply, including a copy of a newspaper article giving the history behind the name. It turned out that her great uncle had owned a factory that manufactured steel cable for the mines and his factory was the first to be established in the new industrial area. The street was named after him. Always worth a shot because there is usually a history behind the older names. New ones are usually picked at random from a selected group and usually have no background. Hi, I am trying to determine if and when my ggg grandfather fought in a frontier war. He was Jetty Master in PE until 1878. A reported note in his diary was of "Many adventures during the zulu wars". Since the dates of his possible involvement were 1878 and he lived in Port Elizabeth, I am trying to figure out if he was in the Frontier Wars not the Zulu wars but am exploring both. Does anyone know about how the frontier wars affected Port Elizabeth during this period? Were troop ships arriving here as they were in East London? Would conditions have been such that he was moved to send his family away to Durban (there is a passenger departure in April 1878 for a family with the same name)? I have information on the military activities and politics but any advice on activities in the PE area would be very much appreciated. Shannon

Hi Tara, I don't know if this will have any relevance, but we lived in Ladysmith in the 1970s, and knew a Norman Searle. He managed a motor company, and may still be there. He is probably in his 60s or early 70s. Hope this may help.
