Good Morning to all the Listers, I hope all you Xmas shopping has been done with the larder stocked and sufficient medicinal liquids obtained to ward off those nasty ailments, such as the cramp in the hand when it is not holding a round object. Heather, over the waters in Wales, has sent me a number of family gravestone pictures which has got me comparing the engraving on the head stones in Wales and those of ours in SA. Would anyone know if there was a specific style used in the early to mid 1800's in England and SA, to engrave the information. The writing seems to be "smoother" and more rounded than ours, which are more difined with sharper edges. Would the type of stone used in any way influence how the lettering is formed and shaped? There also seems to be the practise of including a number of family names on a stone who are not necessarily buried there. Was this a common practise during those years? If there are any stone masons on the lists could they cast some light on this? May you all have a blessed Christmas and may your stocking be filled with all things good and healthy. To each of you, a merry, merry Christmas. Regards, Rod g
Hi Peter You certainly did not muddy the waters, I understood fully what you were saying - it was my reply written in haste which probably confused matters. Anyway, Ellen Stanton (one of our genie angels) has sent me an early Christmas present of various WAYLAND documents that she has. This includes: 1. The marriage register entry for Jesse ALBUT (Farmer at Winterhoek - no age given) and Louisa Matilda WAYLAND (living near Alice) on 10 Jan 1865. I see that C.J. WAYLAND Sr. and C.J. WAYLAND Jr. signed as witnesses. Presumably the first of these (senior) was Louisa's father Charles Joseph. So who is C.J. junior - a brother? 2. The marriage register entry for Alfred GILFILLAN (aged 34 and a farmer at Glenheath, Middelburg) and Ellen WAYLAND (aged 26, resident at Lovedale at the time of their wedding) who were married at Lovedale on 1 March 1881 by W.T. (or F) GAUL. The witnesses who signed are C.W.H. WAYLAND and W.H. WAYLAND (presumably Charles William Henry and Walter Hart - two of Ellen's brothers). So based on this information I am now convinced that this Ellen WAYLAND was the daughter of Charles WAYLAND and Matilda Lucy HART. 3. The baptisms in the Somerset East Wesleyan-Methodist Chapel for the following children of Charles Joseph WAYLAND and Matilda (HART) - all by Rev. EDWARDS: - Louisa Matilda WAYLAND (b. 5 May 1846, bap. 31 May 1846) - Elizabeth WAYLAND (b. 27 Sep 1847 at Riet River, bap. 2 Mar 1848) - Emma WAYLAND (b. 20 Oct 1848 at Wheatlands, Melk Rivier, bap. 10 Jan 1849) - Charles William Henry (b. 01 Aug 1850 at Melk Rivier, bap. 13 Oct 1850 4. Baptisms in the Port Elizabeth Wesleyan-Methodist Chapel for the following children of Charles Joseph WAYLAND and Matilda (HART): - William Hart WAYLAND (b. 01 Aug 1852, bap. 25 Dec 1857) - Helen WAYLAND [this I assume is the Ellen we have been discussing - the E in Edwin below looks like the H in Helen, so the latter is probably Ellen] (b. 22 Jun 1854. bap. 25 Dec 1857) - Arthur Edwin WAYLAND (b. 5 Feb 1856, bap. 25 Dec 1857) All three of the above were born in the same place, but I cannot decipher the place name. Hope that provides some additional info for some people and a huge thanks as always to Ellen Stanton. I will be away for a while, so will pick up any further discussion on this after the Christmas break. Seasons greetings to everyone. Carol, I think we may have corresponded but thanks for any assistance you can offer. I am looking for Mr Thomas Vice (1833-1889) who was buried by St Pauls Anglican Church in 1889. It was located on the corner of Albany Road and Govan Mbeki Avenue, according to the history section of their current website. Does anyone know which graveyard was used by St Pauls Anglican when it was located on Albany Road? Seeking a grave from 1889. Shannon
It was reported in the June 1978 issue of Looking Back, "In 1976 Mr HE Meyer completed his monumental survey of Port Elizabeth Street and district names, before leaving to settle in his native Germany" and that it had been resolved to publish an edited version in Looking Back. The names of suburbs and areas were dealt with in that issue and in subsequent issues the names of streets beginning with A, B and C were dealt with. In the June 1979 issue it was reported, "It has been decided to suspend the publishing in abbreviated form of Mr HE Meyer's findings on the origin of street and suburb names .. Mr Meyer feels that publication is unsatisfactory unless the information is given in full, and this would take up too much space in our journal." A copy of Mr Meyer's work with his amendments was available for consultation in the South African Collection at the PE Library. Kind regards, Brian+.
If A,B,C were published, does anyone have a copy of the Looking Back that contains "C" to check for Cooke Lane or Street? Hopefully. Shannon On Wed, Dec 19, 2012 at 1:15 AM, The Revd Fr Brian Tee < snottygobble@bigpond.com> wrote: > Looking Back

Hi Peter and Fay This is yet another mystery concerning the GILFILLAN and WAYLAND families. In summary, this is the info that many of us have: Ellen WAYLAND (born 22 Jun 1854 - according to Tessa King she was baptised in PE - I don't have those details, so may have been born there or close by). She was the 6th of 7 children born to Charles Joseph WAYLAND (1817-1889) and Matilda Lucy HART (1826-1877) [not from the Robert HART family]. Their eldest child was Louisa Matilda WAYLAND (1846-?) who married Jesse ALBUT as referred to by Peter below. Ellen supposedly married Alfred GILFILLAN in about 1871. Alfred was born 25 Mar 1846 in Cradock and died 17 Mar 1915 in Queenstown (see http://www.eggsa.org/library/main.php?g2_itemId=1228246). He was the youngest son of William F.A. GILFILLAN and Anna Margaret nee THORNHILL. Ellen died in Middelburg on 28 Jul 1926. The mystery, however, is that Ellen's Memorial inscription reads: "Ellen GILFILLAN died 28.7.1926 nee WAYLAND aged 72 years, wife of Henry". So was the use of "Henry" just a mistake or was she really married to a Henry GILFILLAN - if so who was he and who then did Alfred marry? I only have 2 Henry's in the whole GILFILLAN family and both of them are fully accounted for. The only way to resolve this is to get some kind person to check the Death Notice details for Ellen in the Cape Archives: KAB MOOC 6/9/3010 Ref 12241 and likewise for Alfred: KAB MOOC 6/9/781 Ref 813 (and KAB MOOC 13/1/2511 Ref 39). It seems very unlikely that the above Ellen WAYLAND would have been adopted by her sister Louisa and Jesse ALBUT. So the family story Peter mentions must be referring to a different Ellen WAYLAND. As far as I know Louisa and Ellen only had 3 brothers - Charles William Henry WAYLAND (born 1852, died abt 1929 - no further details), Walter (or Wallis - some more confusion here about his correct name) Hart WAYLAND (1852-1935) and Arthur Edwin WAYLAND (born 1856, died abt 1918 - no further details). So perhaps the nice Ellen was a child of either Charles or Arthur. Best wishes Craig -----Original Message----- From: Peter Kirkman Sent: Monday, December 17, 2012 9:01 AM To: south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ZA-EC] A Few Passengers for Algoa Bay 1861 The following contribution may or may not fit: In 1838 a sister (Mellicent) of the two 1820 Settler HOBSON brothers (David and Carey) came to SA with her second husband, Edwin ALBUT, accompanied by 4 children from her first marriage (NASH), and a daughter by her second husband (Sarah Maria ALBUT - later married to Seymour WARD). The following contribution may or may not fit: In 1838 a sister (Mellicent) of the two 1820 Settler HOBSON brothers (David and Carey) came to SA with her second husband, Edwin ALBUT, accompanied by 4 children from her first marriage (NASH), and a daughter by her second husband (Sarah Maria ALBUT - later married to Seymour WARD). Mellicent and Edwin had another son (Jesse ALBUT) born at Mancazana Post in 1841. Jesse ALBUT married Louisa Matilda WAYLAND. Cryptic old family notes tell us that Jesse "had no children of his own, but he adopted a daughter (a niece of his wife) who later married a GILFILLAN". No name was given for the adopted daughter.
