    3. Hi Ethel, Yes indeed the railway existed in Uitenhage from 1877 - (the line as far as Kariega). According to my book, "the first sod of the railway line between Uitenhage and Graaff-Reinet was turned on 20 March 1875". It was the Cape Midland Line. 3. Hi Colleen "I am assuming there was a tiff at some stage!!!! If there was, I hope they don't mind if we break the silence" Interesting - the plot thickens! Joseph died in 1902 & was alone in KWT for the latter part of his life. Even his wife, Christina, left him and moved to EL where she died in 1926. My father, Patrick, knew absolutely nothing about all his aunts/uncles & cousins in KWT. Somehow my G-Father, Arthur, managed to conceal that part of his life. My father thought Arthur came directly from Ireland. I only discovered the true facts when I started my genealogical adventure about 6 years ago! As I said, you are the first "family" contact I have made. It is difficult to link up after a couple of generations have passed. Alan

    3. Hello Alan, I live in Cape Town and Mom lived in King with my 2 sisters. I was born in Bethulie and 3 months old when we moved to Aliwal North - dad a farmer -where I went to school until Std 8. I went to KHS (Kaffrarian High School for Girls) for 9 and 10 and during those 2 years Mom and the family moved to King from Aliwal. I left there for CT in '77. My roots with Henry is that his daughter Margaret was my Great Grandmother. She married Charles Baines of 16 Oak Street, just long the Road from the Masonic and had 2 sons and a daughter Doris Muriel who was my Grandmother. I had never heard that any of the other Cole family had come over, let alone to King and Mom never mentioned it, so I am assuming there was a tiff at some stage!!!! If there was, I hope they don't mind if we break the silence. -----Original Message----- From: Alan & Ann [mailto:cole@lantic.net] Sent: Monday, December 31, 2012 11:05 AM To: south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ZA-EC] Henry Cole's Family Hi again, Colleen Amazing - from the Rootschat posts I thought you were probably resident in Co. Armagh but it turns out you are right here in RSA too! You are the first person I have found with an interest in the descendants of the KWT Cole's. Your Rootschat posts referred to a WILLIAM HENRY THOMAS COLE, presumably the son of HENRY COLE? How are you related? If you post some info on this list, others will probably be able to help too. Please give me a chance to organise my records. HENRY COLE is a bit of a sideline, JOSEPH COLE is my main interest. I will post links on the list and send attachments off-list. Alan

    3. Hi Sybil, Happy New Year. I have a book on South African railways, so I had a quick look at the information on the line between Pretoria and Pietersburg. (Nylstroom is now called Modimole and Pietersburg is called Polokwane, - all a bit confusing). Apparently the area of the Waterberge was an agricultural area, but not very accessible. With the advent of the railways to that area, the agriculture began to flourish. A line was constructed between Nylstroom and Vaalwater as a way of creating jobs after the National Party won the 1924 elections with the support of the Labour Party. That might account for extra jobs in the area? Hope this helps a little. Best wishes, Rose > Date: Mon, 31 Dec 2012 16:16:51 +0200 > From: sybilbj@gmail.com >

    3. There are many (including myself) who believe that the Julia who was married to William WRIGHT and thereafter to Edward Ford TURVEY was Julia DANIEL (1780-1837). I'm not sure if this has been posted before - I recently dug up the D/N for Mary TURVEY spse of George NELSON (?)and David ARNOT, whose son, Edward Thomas ARNOT signed her D/N on 6 Aug 1879 and listed her parents as Edward Ford TURVEY and "Julia BOLTON or TURVEY sometime wife of WRIGHT". .And so the mystery continues. 1. [ZA-EC] New Year
    2. Trisha McLeod
    3. LONDON: WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 6, 1869. While "Christmas time" is a period of festivity at which most of us indulge in the good things provided with a zest that shows how thoroughly we appreciate this Christian halt in the daily round of worry, toil, and vexation which assail us from January to December, and from December to January, New Year's day brings with it thoughts of a more practical and business kind. It is at this period of the year, above all others, that we take as it were a circular view of our position. In a word, we look about us, and we ask ourselves whether what has been remunerative in the past will be remunerative in the future ?—or whether what has been bad will mend, or whether it would be better to give up in despair ? And what is the answer ? Echo. Nothing more. The future is a blank, and it is as well perhaps for Effort and for Energy that it is so. Some men there are who measure future gains by past successes, but the cases in which such sieves hold water are rather the exception than the rule. Still, New Year's day is the common starting-point for the long race of three hundred and sixty-five days; and as there is a good deal of ground to be covered before the goal is won, it will surprise no one that men pause and make good preparation for the run. In their laudable desire to be foremost in the race some of the competitors will make a false start, and they will so chafe and fret at being brought up with a check, that their chance of winning may be pronounced doubtful. Another set of men there are of a feeble and doubtful turn of mind, that will even hesitate to make any start at all, while the old stager, who has run the course successfully for many years, will prepare to do his work in the old way, in the way which has brought affluence to himself, and to his father before him. But whether the competitors be bold and sanguine, timid or cautious, the race must be run, and in the assurance that it is not always for the swiftest, there is a chance for respectable mediocrity, and even for the slow. During the first month of the year preliminary cantering will be the order of the day. All the little or great schemes by which the competitors declare to win will be paraded up and down the world in the most effective colours, and attention having thus been secured to them, and their value tested, they may be fairly said to have started in the race. Well, competition is a good thingto spur men into action, to sharpen wits, to engender new ideas, to produce improvements in this or that branch of industry; and to prove to us that, if we would keep pace with our fellows, we must obey the policeman's injunction to be moving. It will never do to block up the path, for the maxim of the Briton is to look. " for a clear field and no favour." The course is therefore onward— in defiance of what has been said about a rolling stone—onward with the stream; now in the mud, now in the mire, now in deep water, now in shallow depths ; but always, let us hope, buoyant, full of spirits, and with our heads above water. Cape and Natal News 06 January 1869 Wishing all a prosperous and healthy 2013. Trish

    3. Hi Colleen Here is some info for starters. Link for Henry Cole's Death Notice: http://ancestry24.com/search-item/?id=C2149451171 Link for Henry & Emma Cole's headstone http://www.eggsa.org/library/main.php?g2_itemId=1276701 Link for Joseph Cole's headstone (Ist son of Henry Cole & May Jane Gillespie born in Co. Armagh) http://www.eggsa.org/library/main.php?g2_itemId=1276704 Link for older brother (Joseph Cole's) headstone. The inscriptions that he was a survivor of the Birkenhead & a Royal Horse Guard are suspect and very likely fictitious. I have researched extensively with negative results thus far. http://www.eggsa.org/library/main.php?g2_itemId=1276707 I have not yet found Mary Jane's grave wherabouts. 3. Hi again, Colleen Amazing - from the Rootschat posts I thought you were probably resident in Co. Alan
