Hi listers We broke open the lock on a kist left in our old house by my father-in-law's mother and it it was a treasure trove of old letters, newspapers and postcards from different family members, (also a whole lot of fancy napkins and tableclothes that I have no idea what to do with!). Dear Listers, There has been a lot or discussion over the years about Peter Clarke Daniel and Ann Mitchley who were 1820 Settlers - particularly about their fascinating story. I am a descendent of their son Thomas Mitchley who married Harriet Marshall. While we now have a lot of information about them, there are a few gaps I would love to be able to fill. In Peter Clarke Daniel's will, a portrait of Ann Mitchley that he had commissioned (said to have been painted by I'Ons) was left to their son Thomas Mitchley. Does anyone of the Daniel-Mitchley descendants know anything about the whereabouts of the portrait? It would be wonderful to have a photo of it. Another piece of missing information is the date of their son Thomas Mitchley's death - does anyone have that information? I have photos of Thomas MItchley and Harriet Marshall and their son George Northampton - if anyone would like copies of those do contact me off line. I also have photographs of George Northampton Mitchley and his wife Laura Isabella Wakeford and their children. Regards Gail
She is my mom's second cousin.

Hello Gail, I have done a search for the painting without success. All I know about Thomas is what I have gleaned from Margaret Stocker's research and that is that he was born around 1811 and that he was a mechanic or skilled artisan. You have alreqady sent me a scan of Thomas Mitchley and Harriet Marshall. I would love copies of the photographs of George Northampton Mitchley and his wife Laura Isabella Wakeford and their children. Hi Here is a transcript of the will. Cheers Jenn MOOC 7/1/100,96 This is the will and a declaration of the assets owned by the signatory, Captain A.C.Burnett of His Majesty's 54th Regiment made at Port St John's, Madras, India on 26th August 1824. Witnesses to his will are named as follows: Sergeant William Coates, 2nd Master, 54th Regiment. Thos Fletcher Lieutenant, 54th Regiment. I. J. Grindley. Captain 54th Regiment. The will was registered at the Orphan Chamber at the Cape of Good Hope on the 13th December 1826. It begins with a detailed declaration of various debtors who owe him money (refer list below). It adds that further assets he owns are a house at (unclear whether it is in Scotland or Cape of Good Hope, occupied by William Cruickshanks, Supervisor of Excise, and another house occupied by his mother, Mrs. James Burnett, in the town of Peterhead, Scotland. (Plus a bull he owns there, valued at £200 Sterling), and a yearly interest income payable by Mr. Alexander, a merchant of Peterhead, (no further details about this). A further amount owing to him was £300 Sterling, owed by a James Anderson of Peterhead. The furniture in his house in the town of Peterhead, together with wagons and horses kept there, are also noted as further assets in his Estate. He mentions further that he possess Open Accounts with Messrs Greenwood & Co and Arbuthnot & Co in Peterhead. There could be credits available to his wife from these 2 companies. Finally, he states that he has just insured his life for 12 months for the amount of 7000 Rupees (about £800 sterling). The policy itself is in the possession of his Agent, Arbuthnot &Co of Peterhead. All the assets listed above and any other property of any sort, which he owns, such as horses, bills, bonds etc. are left to his wife, Ann Burnett (her maiden name is unfortunately not stated), and their children. She is also named as the Executrix of his will to be assisted by his sister, Elizabeth McBean, and the son of his "old and highly valued friend", James Anderson, Merchant of Peterhead, Scotland. After her death these assets are to be divided equally among his children (their names are not stated in his will). List of persons named as debtors of the Signatory: (a) Lieut. Peter Taylor of his Majesty's 69th Regiment, who owes me twelve hundred Rupees, equal to £120 Sterling or thereabouts. (b) Lieut. Sanders, Royal African Corps, who owes me 700 Rix Dollars. (c) William Phillips at the Cape of Good Hope, who owes me £20 Sterling. They are both my ancestors. But I believe John Burnet is with one t and AC Burnett was with two. John was born in Torthorwald, Dumfrieshire and Alexander's birthplace is not certain. I have a copy of John's DC and his parents were John burnet and Mary Kerr. I do not have parents or place of birth for Alexander, though he married an Ann McBean from Jamaica whose father was an Angus McBean. Alexander was a military man and John was a politician, before that a merchant/bookkeep who worked for a French Canadian company. John met his wife in Canada, while she was governess for the then governor or Nova Scotia. Maria Beauchamp was born in the Channel Islands but came from a large sea faring family. As far as I know, the two gents are only connected through marriage of their children/grandchildren. Alexander's daughter Anne Margaret Burnett married reverend George Morgan, from Aberdeen, Scotland, whose son Charles Smith Morgan, born in the Cape, married John's daughter, Cornelia Owen Burnet, also born in South Africa. Have more info on both of them if you are interested. What are your research interests in these individuals? I ordered but never received the will of Alexander from cape archives, which might contain more info on him. Hi John I hope this helps? Brounger, William George (*Hackney, Eng., 26.6.1820 - †Guildford, Eng., 5.10.1901), railway engineer, was educated at Totteridge and at London University school. In 1837 he was appointed trainee-railway engineer under the famous Sir Charles Fox (1810-1874), who influenced him greatly. He distinguished himself by becoming, at twenty-seven years of age, a member of the Institute of Civil Engineers. In 1851 he was responsible for designing the large London exhibition hall, later known as the Crystal Palace, and then for building the Sjaelland railway in Denmark. He was the engineer appointed by the Cape Town Railway & Dock company (established in London in 1853) to build the first railway line in the Cape Colony, from Cape Town to Wellington. Remaining in the colony from October 1857 till April 1858 to survey the line, he returned at the end of 1858 with six assistants, becoming the resident engineer during the construction of the line. After the opening of the first section, in February 1862, he was also asked to supervise the operating of the line. In November 1863 the construction work was completed, and, until June 1864, he was the most important link between the company and the Cape government. He was occupied with railway affairs in Britain before returning to the Cape in 1870. In 1871 he joined the government service, and he and his son surveyed railway lines in the Eastern Province. He then inspected the Cape Town-Wellington line, and, after the government had taken it over in 1873, he was appointed colonial railway engineer. As head of the railway department he was in charge of all railway construction and the management of open lines. A great programme, which included the construction of three railway systems linking Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and East London with the Kimberley diamond-fields, was commenced in 1874. In 1875 chief resident engineers in charge of construction on each of the two eastern systems were appointed. B. then became the consultant engineer to the eastern systems, but remained at the head of the western system and retained the title of colonial railway engineer. During his term of duty the railway lines from Cape Town and Port Elizabeth to their junction at De Aar were almost completed, as was the line from East London to Sterkstroom. Other railways built at this time were the branch lines to Malmesbury and Grahamstown, and the line from Port Elizabeth to Graaff-Reinet. For a few months the junction at De Aar was known as Brounger Junction. From 1873 to 1881 B. was a member of the committee of management of the Cape Town botanical gardens and represented the colony at an international phylloxera congress in France in 1881. On his retirement in 1883 he returned to Britain. In 1885 he received the Telford medal, one of the highest awards of the Institute of Civil Engineers, for his paper The Cape government railways. He was undoubtedly one of the outstanding railway engineers of his time and was noted for his thoroughness. He married Sarah Bethia Roberts on 13.5.1847. There were three sons and a daughter. From 1870 to 1896 one of the sons, Richard Ernest Brounger, M.LC.E., also served as an engineer with the Cape government railways, holding, from 1893, the post of chief resident engineer of open lines. This is a research interest of mine. Thank you for sharing this link, Rose. Even though I did not find any family members, it was a fascinating read. What a cosmopolitan church this was. People born across the world got married here. From Yokohama, Japan to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Fascinating! Thanks again Ian Currie On 2014/02/11 12:25 AM, Rose Kelland wrote: > There are a good number of Brides born in the Eastern Cape who married at > St Aidens Church, Yeoville, Johannesburg. Hi all, Have you found the link between John Burnett and Alexander Charles Burnett? Are in anyway related? Regards Rod g Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device
Thanks Rod and John. I found a death notice in NAAIRS for Maria Christina GILBERT (nee NORTIER) for which the date shown is 1886. Information indicates that she may have died in Ladismith, W.Cape. I have very little information about her family but do have the following:- She is the wife of James Charles GILBERT (no other information) They had a son (my great-grandfather) Isaac Henry GILBERT born in Ladismith, Cape 20 Jan 1857) who probably died in Calitzdorp date unknown. I will try the searches you have suggested John. Many thanks, David
