    1. [ZA-EC] Francis Arthur KELLAND 1857-1898
    2. Rose Kelland
    3. Great Grandfather FRANCIS ARTHUR KELLAND was the one who started me off on the right track of the KELLAND family history! After googling for nights on end, many years ago, I found his name linked to East London, just where I was hoping to find him! I didn't know his name then, but because the FRANCIS name had been carried forward to his grandson, and perhaps unwittingly, the ARTHUR name had been carried forward to his great grandson (my husband), the jigsaw all fitted! FRANCIS ARTHUR KELLAND was born in Dartmouth, England on 2nd March 1857 to ROBERT & SUSAN KELLAND. He was christened in St Petrox Church Dartmouth on 28 September 1859 - probably a lively 2 1/2 year old! I've been to St Petrox Church! It's a beautiful little place on the banks of the river Dart next to Dartmouth Castle. Its stone floor slopes from the baptism font down to the front of the church and I often wondered how many pennies had rolled under the feet of parishioners with little boys giggling in the back pews! On Friday, 3rd November 1882, FRANCIS ARTHUR, now a house painter and decorator, married ANNIE JANE GILLARD at that same church. Being a romantic sort, when I was at St Petrox Church a few years ago I imagined a young 26 year old bride, quickly making her way down the narrow path, perhaps picking a few new winter's flowers on the way as she made her way to the little stone building to be wed, knowing that there was adventure ahead! Somewhere between January 1883 and February 1884, they left English island and headed for the Eastern Cape region of South Africa. Keith Tankard in his research on East London's history discovered that FRANCIS ARTHUR KELLAND ran a business together with someone called BOOTH, - KELLAND & BOOTH. Keith Tankard notes that the business was established in 1880 which would explain why FRANCIS ARTHUR isn't on the UK 1881 Census! It also means that he may have planned to wed ANNIE JANE, but wanted to ensure he could support her and a family in the new country, so established himself first before returning to the UK to marry her. KELLAND & BOOTH's offices were in Union Street and St Paul's Road (according to Keith Tankard's research) and later they moved to the High Street on the West Bank and Buffalo Street on the East Bank. In January 1883, according to the Exteter & Plymouth Gazette (12 Jan 1883 Page 7) FRANCIS ARTHUR was "raised to the degree of Master Mason" at the annual meeting of Hanley Lodge 797, and he probably kept his Free Masonic links as he was noted for his work on the decoration of the Masonic Temple in East London and became a Grand Master of the Buffalo Lodge, East London. As an interior decorator FRANCIS ARTHUR was also involved in painting the City Hall in East London. Die Burger (Afrikaans newspaper) 1st June 1991 recalls the history of the City Hall and a restoration project in 1989 when unfortunately the senior architect died before the completion of the restoration. The article notes the coincidence that the original painter of the building, MR F.A. KELLAND, also "died during the building of the city hall at the turn of the century". In August 1889 FRANCIS ARTHUR KELLAND was elected to represent Ward 1 on the East London town council. He was re-elected in 1890 and 1893 but he resigned in January 1895 due to ill health. He died of consumption - pulmonary Pthisis and embolism - on 23rd August 1898 aged just 41 years and is buried at Quigney Cemetery in East London. ANNIE JANE was 42 when her husband died and was left raising their five sons: ARCHIBALD TURNER was only 2 years old when FRANCIS ARTHUR died. PERCY THOMAS was 3 years, ARTHUR was 7 years, PHILIP EDMOND was 9 years and FRANCIS ROBERT was 14 years. (Still trying to confirm where/if a daughter, ANNIE ELIZABETH fits in!) A 'cousin' discovered on the internet said that his mother often spoke to him about FRANCIS ARTHUR as the councillor who seconded the motion to install electric street lights in East London! If you've got this far - thanks! It's been such an exciting journey and I feel so privileged to have all this information about the KELLAND great grandfather. ancestry.co.uk had the 1861 & 1871 census, Keith Tankard as mentioned, Die Burger with that simple little sentence about the City Hall, UK newspapers mentioning his Masonic life, which also help date when he probably left England's shores, and Buffalo City Municipality who very kindly sent me "The Mayor's Minute" recording his resignation as councillor! Today (on familysearch.org) I found his burial record from St Alban's church East London. Unfortunately, it is incomplete! The record No. 368 has "KELLAND" in the name box but no first names, and no other boxes completed except the minister's name H.STEEL WOODS! How utterly frustrating! It is definitely FRANCIS ARTHUR KELLAND, because the records before and after fit in with the August 1898 dates!! Did Rev Woods just forget to complete the record?! There are still gaps - aren't there always! .................... -- Rose Kelland www.rosescountryrose.blogspot.com www.livesandtimesofbella.blogspot.com

    1. [ZA-EC] Hill-Norton
    2. Hazel Dakers
    3. Hi Tammy & co Some of you will know that most of my research has been focused on the Norden family. Sarah Norden married John Norton........ Some years ago I got in touch with Lord Hill-Norton whom I knew to have had research carried out on his own ancestry. During the last few years of his life we corresponded - Cousin Hazel and Admiral (which was how he asked me to address him). Twice I visited him at his home in Hampshire. On the first occasion my husband very kindly took our copier and stood in Admiral's kitchen photocopying relevant items from his tin box of family history. On the second time I took my son then in his early 20's. He was intrigued to question Admiral about his campaigning in the Lords with regard to UFOs. They found more in common. My son had spent some months in Fiji. Admiral had been presented with a tooth (whale's I think) there, signifying that he was a high chief or similar! Admiral was considered scary by many of his subordinates but was charming to us. We attended his memorial service at St Matin's in the Fields with all the ceremony the Navy could muster for the last Admiral of the Fleet. His son did not share Admiral's interest in family history but every now and again I spot the names of some of his descendants in relation to excellence in one sphere or another - fashion for example! I'm so glad to have known Admiral a little! At the time of his death I transcribed an obituary from the Daily Telegraph which may be of interest to you - outstanding career. Hazel Hazel Dakers, London UK researching: BIRNBAUM (Zgierz & Lodz, Poland), GOLD (Zgierz & Lodz, Poland), HEIMANN (Luegde, Germany & South Africa), NORDEN (London and South Africa) www.hazeldakers.co.uk Daily Telegraph obituary: Admiral of the Fleet Lord Hill-Norton (Filed: 19/05/2004) Admiral of the Fleet Lord Hill-Norton, who died on Sunday aged 89, was a formidable Chief of the Defence Staff before becoming the senior military officer in the Nato alliance; he also had a reputation for being one of the rudest men in the Royal Navy. Almost from the beginning of his career some considered him destined either to be court martialled or to end up as First Sea Lord. His reputation for ruthless efficiency and meticulousness, combined with good luck and an irritating habit of being right, took him to the top. This made it seem all the more strange when, as a retired officer in the House of Lords, he placed rather more credence on the possible existence of unidentified flying objects than did less talented individuals. The son of a mining engineer who served in the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War, Peter John Hill-Norton was born in South Africa on February 8 1915 and entered the Royal Navy as a Dartmouth cadet at 13. He did his initial sea training in the cruisers Frobisher and London, then served in the battleships Malaya, Rodney and Ramillies before qualifying as a gunnery officer in 1939. He was serving in the First World War cruiser Cairo, which had converted to an anti-aircraft ship on the outbreak of war. Operating in the North-Western Approaches and in the North Sea, Cairo survived air and submarine attacks during the Norwegian campaign in April and May 1940 while landing troops and conducting an attack on German-held Narvik. Then, on May 28, she was damaged by a bomb and withdrawn for repairs. Hill-Norton was transferred to the 8-inch gun cruiser Cumberland and saw action on the convoy routes to Russia, including the ill-fated PQ17 in 1942. The following year, he joined the Gunnery and Anti-Aircraft Warfare Division of the Admiralty, where he was promoted lieutenant-commander. A year later, he returned to sea in the battleship Howe, which operated off Sumatra and joined the attack on the Japanese-held Sakishima islands in support of the American assault on Okinawa. After the Japanese surrender of Hong Kong, Hill-Norton was transferred to the cruiser Nigeria, flagship of the South Atlantic Station; and on being promoted to commander in 1947, he returned to the Admiralty. By now his reputation as an abrasive and short-tempered officer was well established. He was in the habit of answering the telephone with the words: "Gunnery Division. Hill-Norton. Kindly state your business briefly; we're busy men here." An inadequate response would result in the telephone receiver being slammed down. In 1951 Hill-Norton was executive officer of the new aircraft carrier Eagle when it participated in Mainbrace, one of the first major Nato exercises. Promoted captain at the end of 1952, Hill-Norton went to Buenos Aires as naval attache to Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. He then commanded the new - and somewhat unfortunately named - destroyer Decoy before he returned to the Admiralty as Director, Tactical and Weapons Policy. In 1959 Hill-Norton took command of the carrier Ark Royal, which was beset with difficulties, including one caused by holes being bored in officers' baths five inches above their bottoms as part of a drive against water waste. Hill-Norton was caustic in recollection. On being promoted rear-admiral, he became Assistant Chief of Naval Staff at a time when the Navy unsuccessfully argued its case for a new generation of aircraft carriers to replace Ark Royal and the others. Hill-Norton's final sea appointment was as Flag Officer, Second in Command Far East Fleet, from 1964 to 1966. He continued on a meteoric path upwards when he returned to the Ministry of Defence as Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff with responsibility for personnel and logistics. The following year he became Second Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Personnel. Eight months later, Hill-Norton was appointed Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, where he laid some important foundations for what would later become the Invincible class. In 1969, he went back to the Far East as Commander-in-Chief. The next year he succeeded Sir Michael Le Fanu, who had to retire as First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff on health grounds. This was Hill-Norton's seventh post in just six years. However, after only eight months as the professional head of the Navy, he was appointed Chief of the Defence Staff, a post he retained for three years, thereby serving the Heath Government as its principal military adviser for most of its time in office. A key development during these years was the final commitment to Project Chevaline, the Polaris improvement programme. In 1974 Hill-Norton became chairman of the Nato Military Committee, fulfilling a similar role for the Alliance to that which he had held in Britain as Chief of the Defence Staff. Nato was showing evidence of potential weakness in the wake of America's defeat in Vietnam, the oil crisis and the consequent economic recession throughout the industrialised world. Hill-Norton made little attempt to disguise his belief that the military balance was sliding towards the Warsaw Pact and that our continental allies were not pulling their weight. He was particularly active in pressing for standardisation of equipment between the allies, and emphasised his concerns by revealing that during one exercise 60 Nato aircraft had been "shot down" by their own side. After his retirement from the Navy in 1973, Hill-Norton set out his ideas on politico-military realities in his book No Soft Options (1978), and was a frequent contributor to defence debates in the House of Lords. In 1981 he warned that the Government was taking a "gamble with security" in believing that defence could be bought like soap powder in a grocer's shop and in thinking only in terms of a short European war. When he launched his book Sea Power, the book of a television series which he presented in 1982, he roundly declared that the Defence Secretary John Nott "does not understand defence, and shows no apparent inclination to learn". Once the Falklands War broke out, he was outspoken in declaring that the islands must be blockaded. He championed the introduction of a large home defence force and, to emphasise his concern about the growing Soviet threat, once appeared outside the Palace of Westminster in a fur hat posing as President Chernenko, declaring that Britain's defences were wide open. The defence cuts ordered by Options for Change did not improve his view of politicians, whom he regarded as sufferers from sea blindness. He was scathing about proposals to economise on Armed Forces pensions, and most notoriously called the then defence secretary Michael Portillo "a little creep" for suggesting the sale of Admiralty Arch. In addition, when he chaired a House of Lords' investigation into UFOs, Hill-Norton declared himself unimpressed on learning that the Ministry of Defence was in the habit of destroying accumulated evidence after five years. He was also president of the Sea Cadets' Association, the Defence Manufacturers' Association and the British Maritime League, and Vice-President of the Royal United Services Institution. He was made a Freeman of the City of London in 1973. Although Hill-Norton was feared, hated and respected in equal measure he led from the front. His harsh manner and foul language belied a man who could, on rare occasions, demonstrate an otherwise well-concealed humanity. He was always receptive to sound arguments but would not suffer fools or those who weakened before his onslaughts. Hill-Norton was appointed CB in 1964, KCB in 1967 and GCB in 1970; he was created a life peer in 1979. He married, in 1936, Margaret Linstow, whom he selflessly brought out of hospital to nurse at home himself in recent years. She survives him, with their daughter and son, Vice-Admiral Sir Nicholas Hill-Norton.

    3. It is always interesting to read of one's ancestors. I refer to the note from Wendy de Villiers, grand daughter of Mona and Aubrey. I am married to Donald Schoeman, son of Doreen Nisbet who married Steve Schoeman. Doreen was the daughter of Ruby Miles who married Archy Nisbet. Doreen retired to Durban and often visited Mona and Aubrey Moller. We often stopped in to see Alan Moller whom I think married "Yetti". Ruby was the 7th child of Ben Miles. In the Story of the Frontier Family, our history ends with Donald. I would like to update this on record if there is a possibility. Thank you Rose-Marie Schoeman
