    1. [ZA-EC] More on Land Surveyor responsible for settlement of 1820 settlers
    2. Nikki via
    3. Hi All Some time this month there was a discussion regarding the Land Surveyor who was responsible for surveying the 1820 settlements. Today I came across some info in a copy of Africana Notes and News September 1978 Vol 23. No.3. Excerpt from article entitled The Knobel and Von Buchenoder Tombs by R.R. Langham Carter. “.............. Knobel was appointed secretary of the Uitenhage District on 11 Oct 1804 and continued as secretary to the landdrost under British rule when this was restored in 1806. The Buchenroders lived with him and he married his Maria in Cape Town on 10 July 1809. Knobel worked as a sworn surveyor in the Uitenhage and Albany districts from 1813 to 1822. He was responsible for the survey of Grahamstown in 1814 and he designed the first Dutch Reformed Church in Uitehage three years later. This was erected in 1822 and declared a national monument in 1966. In 1820 the Uitenhage landdrost Colonel J.G. Cuyler and Knobel were among those who met the settlers at Algoa Bay, and on 18 April they set out with the first parties to their grants which Knobel had surveyed. And he planned the lay-out of the new town of Bathurst in the following July.” It would seem that Mr Knobel was a pretty industrious fellow as the article goes on to say that Mrs Knobel gave birth to eleven children in seventeen years! She died in 1827 not longer after giving birth to her twelfth!! Kind regards Nikki Sedgefield No virus found in this outgoing message. 2. Peter Kirkman via
    3. Dear Sue, Your rich contribution to everybody's research is immeasurable, and, I assure you, highly appreciated by all. I am not sure if I was the one who asked you to keep a look-out for the Jeffries brothers all those years ago, but they certainly fall within my sphere of interest (Edward George married my g-grandfather's elder sister Martha). Although I had arrived at the detail regarding the marriage of their parents via a different route (Pallott's Marriage Index), the recording of Edward's baptism is valued new information for me, thank you very much. Research into this family is bedevilled by the unstable spelling variations of the surname : Jeffries, Jefferies, Jeffrys, Jefferys, Jeffreys and probably many more. Early Settler records used "Jeffries" (see also Morse-Jones & Nash), and that was the form used in many early documents in this country. However, in due course it reverted to "Jefferies", (Gad's descendants earlier than those of Edward George), and that is the form in use today by all their descendants. The "missing" baptism record for Gad is intriguing. According to his death notice (VAB MHG J349/1892) Gad died on 15 August 1892 at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 12 days, which puts his date of birth in January 1809, and confirms his age as 11 at the time of his emigration. I once received from an overseas researcher what appeared to be an authentic record of Gad's baptism, dates and names of parents all tallying, but the locality was in Banff, Scotland, which raised my eyebrows. I can't locate that record right now. As Gad did not fall into the line of my main thrust I filed it "elsewhere". Given time,I will find it. Banff civic records are littered with all variations of the spelling that I listed above, and that place certainly seems to have been an important seat of the clan. But Banff is somewhat removed from Brentford, London! The London Brickmaker James Watts was definitely the brother of Mary Ann, the mother of the two Jeffries brothers. What is interesting is that their names do not appear on any of William Howard's preparatory Settler lists, and it can be construed that Watts and his nephews were late replacements for last minute drop-outs. If we could depart for a moment from the world of rigid primary sources, and wander in the realm of Jeffries family lore, Mary Ann (Watts ) Jeffries died quite young, and Gad snr. married again. This resulted in enormous family conflict, and the new Mrs Jeffries' hostility towards her stepsons resulted in the unhappy lads hopping on the "Ocean" with their uncle James. Good one to preserve! 3. An amazing book to read. Once started, you cannot put it down. Even if this is not your ancestor, I would suggest you read it. The background conditions might shed more info on your family too. Regards. She is my great grandmother. I have her death notice which gives her race as coloured and her father’s name Fred King. Her mother according to her daughters is Charlotte James born in Scotland and her siblings Ben, Charlotte and Ellen(of whom I have no information at all). Her surviving daughters say she would tell them the story of being descended from a little girl shipwrecked near Lambazi who married into a Xhosa clan. Her grandmother was definitely a coloured lady, who a family source names as Patience Tshomane and her grandfather an Englishman John Henry King, who had 7 sons and 3 daughters, however this same family source names her father as Moses which is confusing. I am really interested in trying to resolve this conundrum and find out any other information on this family. I have a wealth of information on the Fynn family but sadly nothing on the King family or Charlotte James who my great Aunt thinks may have been a Wesleyan missionary. 3. Have you seen this blog? http://www.archivalplatform.org/blog/entry/cultural_identity/ If you go to the bottom where the comments are there is a comment from Barry Short who says that the same woman is his grandmother? I know it's from 2011 but hope it helps :) -----Original Message----- From: south-africa-eastern-cape-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:south-africa-eastern-cape-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Vanessa Maddox via Sent: 25 January 2015 08:54 PM To: south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.com Subject: [ZA-EC] King family in the Eastern Cape H list I am searching for any information on the King family in the Ngqeleni area and in particularly the family of Sarah Fynn nee King born Ngqeleni 1888 died Durban 1971.
