DAVID WOOD ------x------ Mr. David WOOD, Assistant Park Curator, who was seized with a sudden illness immediately after addressing a meeting of the Debating Society on Thursday evening, passed away on Saturday afternoon at Grey's Hospital. Mr. WOOD's seizure was totally unexpected, and from the time that he was struck down until his death he never recovered consciousness. A native of Torquay, Devonshire, he came to this country some 25 years ago, and was for many years in charge of the gardens at King's House, Durban, coming to Maritzburg to take up duty here about eight or 10 years back. As a horticulturist the deceased gentleman had few equals, his aptitude for this work he inherited from his father, who was himself a horticulturist of note, and the author of several books on the subject. A quiet unassuming man, Mr. WOOD was universally popular, whilst in him the Wesleyan Church loses a devoted worker, having been a lay preacher from his youth. He leaves four sons and three daughters, Mrs. AVENSTRUP, Mrs. BEGGS and Mrs W ALLSOPP, whilst his wife died nine months ago. Mr. WOOD was a valued member of the Maritzburg Parliamentary Debating Society, his ability as a speaker being very marked, and it was in addressing this body that he was struck down. A very fine character, upright and honest to a degree, the community has suffered a severe loss in his sudden demise. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, proceeding to the cemetery after a service in the Wesleyan Church. The Rev Eben GRIFFIN officiated and the body was followed to the grave by a large number of people, the chief mourners being Messrs Samuel and Joseph WOODS (sons), Mr ALLSOPP (son-in-law), Mr F C WOOD and T WOOD (nephews).
