Hello fellow listers I have made some headway researching my mother's paternal side but am in need of some assistance. My 3rd great grandfather, L.W.J.G. LESTER, was born on 11/06/1826 in (Armagh County?), Ireland. >From his journal, we learn he got a free passage to the Cape & later became a constable in East London. After reading www.eastlondon-labyrinth.com/germans/lady-kennaway-02.jsp<http://www.eastlondon-labyrinth.com/germans/lady-kennaway-02.jsp> which has a detailed account of the shipwreck and passenger lists, I have come to believe that my 3rd great grandparents, Louis & Jane GAFFNEY, are being referred to below & would very much like to get confirmation of their marriage which I deduce was on 24/11/1857: "In the meantime, four of the women were immediately offered employment at East London and a further two found husbands and were married at once. One of these was a German girl who was swept off by a German settler. This was probably Fredericka Schulle, the only German girl in the party, who had been enlisted from Middlesex and not from Ireland. The other was married to a local police constable. None of the artisans chose to remain at East London, although some would return later." After Jane's death in King William's Town on 05/03/1871, aged 34, Louis moved to Pondoland where he remarried a Miss WATSON. Jane had borne him seven children (Susanna, Emma, Louis, Clement, Albert, Edwin & Henry Charles - my 2nd great grandfather) & he needed a wife to look after them. Louis apparently married a 3rd time, possibly in Durban, where he lived until shortly before his 98th birthday. I located this in some photocopies I was given from research carried out by one of my LESTER ancestors. "Evidently Louis GOLDSCHMIDT served in the German Army, which he deserted in order to join the British Army. He was pardoned by Queen Victoria on condition that, because he had brought disgrace to the family name, he adopted his mother's maiden name which was LESTER and tacked it on after his surname of GOLDSMITH - thus the double-barrelled surname "Goldsmith Lester" came into being." If anyone can provide me with confirmation of any one of his 3 marriages, I'd be most grateful.
