My forebears Hugh and Mary Ann Child arrived in Capetown in 1849. With them they had at least one son, Harry who served his apprenticeship and the Cape Argus as a typesetter (compositor). In 1864 they came to New Zealand on the Ship Maori. I have quite a few questions. On which ship did they travel to Cape Town? Were there other children, perhaps an older child than Harry who was almost three at the time? Hugh Child was a carpenter but on the ship to NZ manifest his occupation is listed as Wheelwright. Mary Ann later states she had 10 children but in 1864 only 4 came to NZ. My great-great grandmother Hannah Maria Price Child was born about 1855 and so I would also like to track down any details of her birth or baptism and any other details about her siblings also. As two of the four children seem to have also disappeared after arriving in NZ, there is a possibility they may have returned there also. On the Maori also were members of a family surname Black. One of the children, Catherine, married Harry Child. It occurs to me that these families might have known each other in Cape Town so if finding anything about either family, it might lead to more about the other. A lot of question, I know but I would appreciate any leads that might reveal any of these questions please.
Well, the little I can offer is that, as wheels were made out of wood at the time, one would consider that a wheelwright would be a specialised form of carpentry, and a more desirable one at that.
