Dear All I am led to believe that my 3rd great grandfather, Thomas Henry MARTIN (28, farmer), who married Hester Susanna BENECKE (19) in Hermannsburg, Natal on 26/07/1869, came out to South Africa on a German (?) Warship named 'Retina' from England. I have also been given the following which links Thomas Henry MARTIN to the Umvoti Rifles:- Early Pioneers of Greytown up to 1910 by Y. Christie. 1999 MARTIN, A - Pioneer Henry/Harry - Farmer at 'Luckshall' (HMB); Umvoti Rifles 1879 Does anyone have any knowledge to impart on the 'Retina' or how I can get my hands on information pertaining to the Umvoti Rifles? I have contacted the Umvoti Mounted Rifles (UMR), Cnr Pine Street & 7th Avenue, Durban to no avail. Many thanks.
