Mary Calmeyer with daughter Violet Calmeyer travelled from Cape Town on the Aberdeen line ship 'Salamis' (sailing from Brisbane via ports) that arrived London 13 Jun 1904. On that manifest the mother's age is given as 34 (ie. born abt. 1870) and the daughter's age is given as 2? (ie. born abt. turn of the year 1901/1902). Both are marked down as 'British Subjects, English' (not marked down as 'Born in British Colonies'). regards, Barry ------------------------------ Message: 3 Date: Thu, 13 Sep 2012 18:55:09 +0200 From: "DI - DD KITS" <dianne@dbnmail.co.za> Subject: Re: [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] CALMEYER To: <south-africa-cape-town@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <000601cd91d0$8a4dc4f0$9ee94ed0$@dbnmail.co.za> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Thanks Barry - how interesting....... -----Original Message----- From: south-africa-cape-town-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:south-africa-cape-town-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Barry Brown Sent: 13 September 2012 06:43 PM To: south-africa-cape-town@rootsweb.com Subject: [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] CALMEYER Not an answer to your actual question, but it might fit your jigsaw...... May be John White thought taking on the De Witts surname may enhance him to the local population by sounding more Dutch. I know a few of the ancestry lines I have helped with over the years got to UK from somewhere in Eastern Europe and Anglicised their surnames. I had a great aunt who come from Norway to New York; she was a Gaard and changed her name to Gordon to make it easier to get a job.
