    1. [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] H J SPOLANDER Clockmaker and Watchmaker
    2. Wally And Elrine Greig
    3. Henry Joseph SPOLANDER was a clockmaker and watchmaker in Cape Town, in the late 19th and 20th Centuries. He traded as H J Spolander. The first shop of his, that we are aware of, was on the corner of Greenmarket Square and Longmarket Street. At a later stage he moved to Mutual Building, which is bounded by Darling, Parliament and Longmarket streets. The Greenmarket Square premises can be seen in one of Arthur Elliott's photos. Elliott arrived in Cape Town in 1900 and died in 1938. Mutual Bulding opened in 1940. Spolander clocks are still in existence in Cape Town. Mabel Anni Spolander was either the daughter or niece of H J SPOLANDER. If anyone can add anything to the above,I would be pleased to hear from them. Thanks Wally Greig

    3. The following may be of interest or assistance. Manifest of Cargo (1862-1866) for watches, watch materials and jewellery lists eitherĀ  A & F Spolander or Spolander & Co. It is reported that the military authorities contemplate constructing a fort on the Lion's Rump, or rather on the plateau below the Rump, and just above the Malay cemeteries, and in order to convey materials, guns etc, to that eminence a road has been surveyed and pegged out across the properties of Mr. P. PENTZ and Mrs SPOLANDER, in Scotch Kloof. - Colonies and India March 14, 1888 Regards Trish ________________________________ From: Wally And Elrine Greig <wgreig@mweb.co.za> To: SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, September 10, 2012 12:19 PM Subject: [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] H J SPOLANDER Clockmaker and Watchmaker Henry Joseph SPOLANDER was a clockmaker and watchmaker in Cape Town, in the late 19th andĀ  20th Centuries.
