    3. Hi Maria I had a look on Ancestry.co.uk and found James in the 1911 Census: Address 32 Greenmount Place, Beeston Hill, Leeds James Alfred Johnson 40 married 5 years Born Manchester Amelia Elizabeth 40 married 5 years Born Galoway Doreen Isobel 4 Born Cathcart Cape Colony S. Africa * occupation looks like controller? Employed in a sea merchant (fold on page and handwriting difficult to read) Birth: Dec q 1870 Salford 8d 10 - loads of churches in the area but not all had baptism records after 1837. I did check those on the Lancashire Parish Archives that did do it after 1837, but no record of James Albert. There are quite a couple of James A Johnsons born in Salford in the census records - so not sure which is the right one. 1871 Census - Pendleton (registration district Salford) William Johnson 29 miner born Salford Hannah Johnson 29 born Manchester William 6 born Pendleton Mary 4 born Pendleton Joseph 2 born Salford James A 7 months born Pendleton 1881 Census - Pendleton in Salford (12 Arthur Street) James Johnson 48 shoeing smith born Bishop Milton Mary 34 cotton weaver unemployed born Manchester James A 12 scholar born Salford John 11 scholar born Salford Isabella 3 born Pendleton Francis 2 months born Salford It is a pity your Johnsons aren't from North Meols, Southport, Lancashire as I have just finished copying the transcriptions from the archives site. So I have loads of information on hand. All my Johnsons are originally from there before they established themselves in Liverpool. Hope this helps. This makes me think they were married around 1904-5. James worked as a time keeper on the South African Railways and Amelia was in service. I believe they moved back to England before the war of 1911. I'm hoping to find their marriage certificate.  Can anyone help?
