Just a thought about the name change. May be John White thought taking on the De Witts surname may enhance him to the local population by sounding more Dutch. I know a few of the ancestry lines I have helped with over the years got to UK from somewhere in Eastern Europe and Anglicised their surnames. Name changes were very common all over especially in the USA as immigrants anglicised their names. I had a great aunt who come from Norway to New York; she was a Gaard and changed her name to Gordon to make it easier to get a job.
