Hi Tara >From the correspondence you look like you might like a good mystery. The South African piece of my mystery is defeating me as I've not found anything to help with the solution as yet. Its like a 100 piece jigsaw with 50 pieces missing. As far as I can tell, two young lads (Percy & Walter) from Todmorden in West Yorkshire had a family catastrophe. Their father John Hargreaves attempted suicide in 1892. Their mother also attempted suicide in December 1893, and succeeded. I think the the two lads must have joined the Army and emigrated to South Africa (or vice versa) but records for these events have so far eluded me. What I do know for sure is Percy Hargreaves married circa 1905 and had 3 children; Hilda Priscilla 1909, Constance (Connie) 1911 and Walter ? Hilda married Ivan Gerwald Jurgensen abt 1927 and this line is OK. Following your advice re the newspaper archive etc I pieced together enough info on the Jurgensens but the Hargreaves remain a mystery. Because of the events in Yorkshire I suspect the two boys didn't reveal much and kept their heads down, as it were, leaving their grandchildren with a black hole in their family history. The family have a large collection of medals which are helping a little. For example "168 TPR P Hargreaves SA Lt Horse; Cape Colony, Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith, Orange Free State, Belfast and South africa 1901". Can you fill in any gaps do you think? There may be lots of descendants out there that might recognise some of the above? Best wishes Allan -----Original Message----- From: south-africa-cape-town-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:south-africa-cape-town-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Tara Norton Sent: 07 September 2012 10:31 To: south-africa-cape-town@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN] DOMESTIC NOTICES, THE NATAL WITNESS,JUL 19 - 23, 1923 Hi Allan If you go to http://www.eggsa.org/newspapers/ there is a 'SEARCH ALL NEWSPAPERS' option down the left hand side of the web page which saves you having to clog up your inbox with "these really informative emails."
